About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday spot in North Wales – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, board games, and enough crisps to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck us down a narrow lane that turned into a proper mudslide after a sneaky shower. There I was, white-knuckling the wheel, while my other half laughed and snapped pics of the sheep giving us the side-eye. “This is an adventure!” she chirped, as we fishtailed our way through Betws-y-Coed – no, wait, Betws Gwerfil Goch, that tucked-away village where the hills just swallow you up. Heart in my mouth, but by Jove, it built the anticipation no end.

Pulling up to this charming detached cottage felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Perfect for us two and our cheeky labradoodle, with its wood-fired hot tub bubbling away like a promise of bliss, a snug enclosed garden, and those jaw-dropping views stretching over the Welsh countryside. First impressions? Spot on – cosy inside, welcoming vibe, and that fresh country air hitting you like a tonic. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and just soaked it in, grinning like loons.

The next few days blurred into proper cottage chaos, the best kind. Mornings kicked off with bacon butties on the patio, watching mist lift off the fields while the dog chased her tail in the garden. We wandered the quiet lanes around the village, spotting red kites wheeling overhead – proper majestic, they are. One afternoon, we trundled a couple of miles to the River Dee, just down the road, for a gentle splash about and a picnic that ended with cheese rolling off the blanket into the grass. Laugh riot, that was. Evenings? Firing up the hot tub became our ritual – wood smoke curling up as we clinked glasses of local ale, toes wrinkling in the heat, stars popping out one by one. Bliss, interrupted only by the dog deciding she fancied a dip mid-soak. Cue soggy towels and helpless giggles.

We kept it simple, no grand plans – that’s the joy of these spots. A lazy mooch to the nearby woods for blackberrying (tart ones, mind, puckering our faces), then back for pasta thrown together with whatever was in the fridge. There was this one moment of gentle self-reflection, sat by the hot tub as the sun dipped behind the hills: life’s mad rush back home feels miles away here. Me, fretting over emails and deadlines, her juggling the school run – we both admitted we’d forgotten how to just *be*. No screens, no schedules, just us, the countryside hum, and a bit of happy disarray like the time I overfilled the log burner and set off the smoke alarm at midnight. Classic me.

It was pure relaxed family-couple magic – well, us pretending to be the perfect pair with our furry sidekick. North Wales has this way of resetting your soul without you even trying. If you’re after simple pleasures and a smidge of cottage mayhem, this is your spot. We left with full hearts, muddy boots, and already plotting a return. What a cracker of a break.
