About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in North Wales – or rather, the comedy of errors that got us there. We’d piled into the car from Manchester bright and early, me navigating with my trusty phone while the other half drove, kids in the back already bickering over crisps. About halfway, just past Wrexham, disaster struck: a massive flock of sheep decided to stage a sit-in right across the narrow lanes. We sat there for 45 minutes, engine idling, while the farmer herded them with his dog like it was some slow-motion episode of Countryfile. The kids thought it was hilarious; I was sweating over whether we’d make check-in. By the time we escaped, we were all a bit frazzled, and I’d spilt my coffee all over the passenger mat. Classic us.

Still, as we finally trundled down that winding farm track, the anticipation bubbled up. North Wales has this knack of pulling you in with its rugged charm, and I was dying for a bit of peace after the chaos. Pulling up to the property – this gorgeous, renovated former dairy house tucked into a working farm – my jaw dropped. It’s the sort of place that looks effortlessly posh yet cosy, all private and welcoming, with views stretching out over the hills that make you forget the sat-nav nightmares. First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and the host greeted us with a cheery wave and fresh eggs from the farm. Inside, it was pure bliss – light flooding the open spaces, everything spotless and inviting. The kids immediately dashed off to explore the garden, while I flopped on the sofa, exhaling what felt like a week’s stress.

That messy arrival only made the first evening sweeter. We cracked open a bottle of wine (well, squash for the little ones), rustled up a simple pasta, and just soaked it in. The tranquillity hit hard – no traffic hum, just birdsong and the odd moo from the cows next door. It got me reflecting a bit, you know? Life back home is non-stop, always rushing from one thing to the next, but here, staring out at the Shropshire countryside rolling towards the Welsh borders, I realised how much I needed this reset. A gentle nudge from the universe via sheep traffic jam, perhaps.

Next morning, we were out exploring Hawkstone Park Follies, literally on the doorstep – those 100 acres of quirky parkland with hidden grottos, mini-castles, and old menageries that had the kids wide-eyed and me chuckling at my inner child. We wandered for hours, then treated ourselves to afternoon tea at Hawkstone Hall, all scones and clotted cream under the sun. Fancy a kick about? The farm’s open spaces were perfect for that, or a gentle cycle along the nearby lanes. Evenings were for lazy barbecues, watching the sunset paint the hills pink. Sure, we had another mini-mishap when the youngest got stuck in a hedge chasing a rabbit, but it just added to the laughs.

Staying here felt like the ideal North Wales escape – close enough to Shrewsbury’s market buzz for a mooch, yet worlds away in your own slice of farm serenity. If you’re after that mix of adventure and downtime, this is it. We left buzzing, already plotting a return. Who knew a sheep blockade could lead to such magic?
