About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little self-catering cottage near Tywyn – it was one of those classic North Wales journeys where the sat-nav decides to have a midlife crisis. We’d left Shrewsbury nice and early, me and the missus in our trusty old estate car piled high with welly boots and enough tea bags to last a Welsh winter. But halfway through the winding lanes towards Snowdonia National Park, the heavens opened, and we hit a proper downpour. Cue the windscreen wipers on overdrive and me squinting at road signs that looked like they’d been painted by a tipsy sheep farmer. We took a wrong turn onto some single-track road – classic us – and ended up nose-to-nose with a farmer herding cows. A quick reverse manoeuvre (with much honking and waving) got us back on track, but by then we were laughing so hard we nearly needed a cuppa to recover.

Pulling up to the cottage, though, all that faded away. Nestled in this peaceful rural spot in the Dysynni Valley with no passing traffic to spoil the vibe, it was love at first sight. A cosy three-bed job with a hot tub bubbling away like it was waiting just for us, and those magnificent views stretching over the valley right to the sea at Cardigan Bay. We stepped inside, dropped the bags, and just stood there grinning – luxury without the fuss, bang in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. The anticipation had been building all week, scrolling through pics of the place, but the reality? Even better. Sun breaking through the clouds, valley mist rolling gently, and that private beach access just three miles down the lane. Perfect for a chilled couple’s break.

We wasted no time settling into cottage life – the good kind of chaos, you know? First morning, I fumbled about making brekkie on the Aga-style cooker, burning the toast while she nipped out to spot the sheep grazing right outside the window. Simple pleasures like that: brewing up strong tea, watching buzzards soar over the valley, then sinking into the hot tub with a GandT as the sun dipped towards Cardigan Bay. Afternoons were for lazy wanders – a short drive to Tywyn’s beach for a bracing walk along the sands, picking up cockles from the local stall and dodging the waves. Or popping over to Aberdyfi, just a few miles away, for fish and chips wrapped in paper, eaten on the harbour wall while boats bobbed about. No grand plans, just us, the sea breeze, and the odd seagull eyeing our supper.

One evening, after a gentle hike up a nearby trail – nothing too strenuous, we’re not twenty anymore – we flopped in front of the telly with the log burner going (even in summer, it gets nippy up here). That’s when I had a proper moment of reflection: life’s mad rush back home, deadlines and all that, feels miles away in a place like this. Makes you realise how daft it is not to switch off more often. We even had a cheeky game of Scrabble that descended into chaos – her accusing me of cheating with made-up Welsh words like “cwtch” (which, fair play, is real). Light-hearted rows over who hogs the hot tub jets, that’s the stuff memories are made of.

By the end of our stay, we were proper hooked on this relaxed rhythm: valley views at dawn, beach strolls at dusk, and zero traffic noise. North Wales has that magic – it strips everything back to the joys of just being together. If you’re after a family-couple escape (kids optional, we went sans), this corner of Snowdonia’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
