About North Wales
I finally made it to that stunning detached barn near Coton, just four miles from Whitchurch, after a bit of a faff on the journey up. I'd set off from the Midlands full of beans, playlist blaring, imagining lazy afternoons ahead. But no, halfway there, the satnav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent me down a single-track lane that looked more like a sheep's personal runway. I ended up reversing into a hedge while a farmer in a Land Rover eyed me like I'd just insulted his prize ewe. Classic me – always turning a simple drive into an unplanned adventure. Still, by the time I pulled up, the anticipation was buzzing; the place looked even better than the photos, all luxurious inside with that enclosed garden begging for a proper unwind and a cracking hot tub steaming away invitingly.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Tucked in this peaceful little village, it felt like the world had hit pause. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the odd distant moo. I dumped my bags, cracked open a brew, and just... breathed. The plan? Absolutely nothing ambitious. This was about switching off, proper slowing down after months of rushing about like a headless chicken at work.

The first day set the tone. I lounged in the garden with a book – some daft crime thriller I couldn't put down – feet up on a lounger, sun filtering through the trees. Every now and then, I'd wander over to the hot tub, sink in up to my neck, and let the bubbles work their magic. Felt like a right luxury spa, but without the snooty receptionist. Lunch was a no-cook affair: cheese, crackers, and a cheeky bottle of plonk from the fridge. Who needs restaurants when you've got this setup? The garden's fully enclosed, so I didn't even bother getting dressed properly – just shorts and a t-shirt, pretending I was on a private island.

Next morning, same vibe. Porridge in bed (lazy bones that I am), then back to the garden with another chapter. I did pop out briefly to Whixall Moss, just three miles away – it's this wild, peaty nature reserve with boardwalks that make you feel like you're in a David Attenborough doc. But even that was low-key: a gentle stroll, spotting dragonflies, then straight back for hot tub o'clock. No rushing to tick off castles or races; that's for another trip. Here, it was all about the joy of doing bugger all. Reading till my eyes went funny, napping under a brolly when the sun got cheeky, maybe a bit of gentle gardening if the mood took me – weeding while listening to a podcast.

By day three, I had that gentle moment of reflection, staring into my tea. Life back home's non-stop – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here, time stretched out like elastic. I caught myself smiling at how daft it was: me, who can't sit still, finally learning to chill. A mate texted asking about hikes or pubs; I replied with a hot tub selfie and "Living the dream, doing sweet FA." He was jealous, rightly so.

Packed up on the last day feeling recharged, not knackered. If you're after North Wales for proper relaxation – garden lounging, bookish bliss, and hot tub heaven – this barn's your spot. Can't wait to go back and perfect the art of nowt.
