About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday cottage near Menai Bridge – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a comedy of errors. Sat-nav had us weaving through narrow lanes that seemed to get skinnier by the minute, and just as we crested a hill with that stunning view of the Menai Strait twinkling below, the heavens opened. Rain hammered the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and my other half, ever the optimist, declared we’d packed “just enough” snacks – which meant we were down to a single soggy biscuit by the time we arrived. I was starting to question my life choices, picturing a soggy weekend huddled in the car rather than kicking back in North Wales.

But pulling up to the place? Pure magic. It’s this spacious, detached beauty tucked away with proper privacy, and as we dashed through the downpour to the door, I caught sight of the private swim spa hot tub overlooking the strait – steaming invitingly even in the wet. First impressions? Knocked it out of the park. We tumbled inside, dripping like drowned rats, and were hit with this cosy wave of warmth from the woodburner already flickering away, all set up and ready. Luxurious doesn’t even cover it – plush beds that practically hugged you, rooms that felt like they’d been designed for sinking into after a day out.

We shook off the arrival chaos with a brew and a laugh about my legendary map-reading skills (or lack thereof), then fired up that hot tub once the rain eased. Bliss doesn’t come close – bubbling away with views across to Snowdonia’s misty peaks, jets pounding the travel kinks out of us. It was the perfect reset after the road farce. Next morning, we wandered the couple of miles into Menai Bridge for a proper fry-up at a cracking little cafe, chatting with locals about the best spots. Beaumaris was calling too, just a short hop away – we ambled its pier, grabbed fish and chips from a harbourside chippy, and poked around the independent shops selling Welsh crafts and fudge that I definitely didn’t overdo on.

Days blurred into coastal rambles along Anglesey’s rugged paths, spotting seals bobbing in the waves, and a gentle hike up to a viewpoint where the sea meets the mountains. Evenings were woodburner nights with board games and takeaways from one of Menai’s gems – that chicken balti from the Indian still haunts my dreams. One quiet moment by the hot tub, pint in hand, I caught myself reflecting: amid the usual holiday hustle, this spot forced us to slow down, breathe in the sea air, and just be. No screens, no rush – just us, the view, and that lingering taste of mishap-turned-memory.

If you’re after a North Wales getaway that starts bumpy but lands spectacular, this is it. We left buzzing, already plotting a return.
