About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in North Wales – a proper British road trip that started with blue skies over the motorway and ended with me swearing at the sat-nav (under my breath, mind). We’d piled into the car from Manchester, kids in the back munching crisps, me navigating with a dodgy phone signal. About halfway, just past Chester, we hit a massive tailback from some roadworks. What should’ve been a breezy two hours turned into three, and by the time we neared Abergele, the heavens opened. Still, as we pulled up to this cracking ground-floor cottage on the outskirts, between Pensarn and Towyn, my heart lifted. It looked just the ticket – bright, modern, with that airy open-plan vibe promising cosy nights in. Stepping inside, the plush seating, telly, and feature fire screamed relaxation, and the sleek kitchen with its breakfast bar had me dreaming of morning brews already. The conservatory-style dining spot flooded with light, even through the drizzle. First impressions? Spot on. We’d struck gold for a family getaway along this stunning coast.

Keen walkers that we are – or so I tell myself – we’d packed boots and waterproofs, eyes on the coastal paths right on our doorstep. Day one, the weather played nice. Sun peeked out after breakfast, so we headed straight for Pensarn Beach, a gentle stroll from the cottage. It’s flat and easy, perfect for little legs, with sands stretching out and views across the bay to the Great Orme. We pottered along, skim stones, and laughed as waves nipped at our toes. By afternoon, we’d linked up to the Wales Coast Path, climbing a bit towards Towyn for that proper sea-breeze buzz. Chuffed doesn’t cover it – proper invigorating, with gulls wheeling overhead and not a cloud in sight.

But oh, the British weather, eh? Next morning, it flipped like a bad coin. Lashing rain hammered the conservatory roof as we scoffed porridge at the breakfast bar. Our big plan – a hearty hike up to the headland for panoramic views – was scuppered. Instead, we embraced the soggy reality with a short, muddy tramp along the beach at low tide, hoods up, splashing through puddles. The kids loved it, turning it into a treasure hunt for shells and crab claws. I’ll admit, trudging back soaked to the bone, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection: why do I always pack like we’re off to the Med? Layers upon layers, yet still shivering. Gentle reminder that holidays here are about rolling with it, not fighting the forecast.

The weather gods redeemed themselves on day three with a crisp, blustery day. We tackled a loop from Towyn, weaving through dunes and along clifftop paths – nothing too strenuous, maybe three miles, but with enough ups to earn a chippy tea later. Wind whipped our cheeks rosy, and spotting seals basking on rocks was the highlight. Evenings, we’d collapse into the plush seating by the fire, drying off and reliving the day’s soggy triumphs.

Looking back, those weather-whipped walks made the trip. No epic treks needed; the coast delivered adventure on its terms. If you fancy ditching the daily grind for fresh air and fickle skies, grab a cottage like this. You won’t regret it – well, apart from forgetting the extra socks.
