About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in North Wales – sat-nav on, tea thermos in hand, and me behind the wheel, chuffed to be escaping the daily grind. We’d left early from Cheshire, winding through those lush valleys towards Harlech in Gwynedd, right in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. About halfway, disaster struck: a cheeky sheep decided to play chicken with the car, forcing me into an emergency swerve that sent my other half’s pasty flying into the footwell. Cue much laughter and a quick roadside cleanup – classic British road trip fodder, innit?

By the time we crested that winding driveway, anticipation had us buzzing. What if it wasn’t as good as the photos? But blimey, first impressions didn’t disappoint. Perched high above Harlech, this luxurious contemporary place hit us with uninterrupted sea views straight out to the championship golf course and those brooding Snowdonia mountains. It’s got that perfect mix of period charm and modern comforts, ideal for families or mates, and a godsend for dog owners too – our spaniel bounded in like he owned the joint.

We’d booked it for a proper do-nothing break, and that’s exactly what we did. No grand plans, just lazy cottage days stretching out like the views. Mornings kicked off with brews on the terrace, feet up, watching mist lift off the peaks while the sea twinkled below. The garden was a dream – wildish but private, with spots to flop in a lounger, book in hand, as the dog chased imaginary foes through the grass. I devoured three paperbacks that week, losing hours to tales of adventure while barely moving a muscle. Lunch? A simple picnic of cheese, crackers and local pork pies from Harlech’s deli, scoffed al fresco with zero fuss.

Afternoons blurred into siestas or gentle wanders down the hill to the beach – all of five minutes away – for a paddle in the Irish Sea, toes in the sand, then back for more nothing. Evenings meant firing up the barbecue (weather permitting, fingers crossed for Welsh sun), then curling up inside with board games and a cheeky bottle of plonk, the windows framing that epic panorama as dusk fell. One night, I caught myself staring out, glass in hand, thinking how rare it is to just… stop. Work emails? Forgotten. Chores? Miles away. It was a gentle nudge that slowing down isn’t slacking – it’s proper recharging.

Sure, we dipped into Harlech Castle for a mooch one drizzly afternoon – that medieval beast looms right in town, all dramatic ruins and history – but mostly, it was about savouring the stillness. No itineraries, no Instagram pressure, just us, the garden’s hum of bees, and the joy of pottering nowhere fast. North Wales worked its magic; we left refreshed, already plotting a return. If you fancy switching off proper, this is your spot.
