About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to Llangollen – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, dog leads and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some winding lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. Picture this: me, my other half, and our soppy Labrador, Monty, all crammed in, with him trying to stick his nose out the window while I’m swearing under my breath at a flock of sheep blocking the road. Classic North Wales welcome, that – a little mishap to remind you you’re properly off-grid.

But honestly, as we rolled into town along the River Dee, all that stress melted away. The anticipation had been building for weeks – visions of cosy evenings by the fire, no emails pinging, just us and the great outdoors. Pulling up to this gorgeous little retreat right in the heart of Llangollen, I was gobsmacked. It’s the perfect spot for a couple and their dog: compact, inviting, with that lived-in charm that screams ‘kick back and relax’. We grabbed the residents’ parking pass, ditched the car, and within minutes were wandering the bustling streets, Monty tugging at his lead, tail wagging like mad.

First impressions? Spot on. The place sits in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, hugging the River Dee – a Site of Special Scientific Interest, no less – so you wake up to birdsong and the gentle rush of water. We unpacked amid the usual cottage chaos: Monty immediately claiming the rug as his bed, us tripping over bags while hunting for the kettle. Simple pleasures, eh? That first cuppa on the doorstep, watching narrowboats chug by on the canal, felt like pure magic.

We didn’t waste time. A gentle stroll along the river path led us straight into town’s independent shops – I nabbed a quirky Welsh slate coaster that’s now my kitchen hero – and we scoffed a massive fry-up at one of the fabulous eateries. Laughter all round when Monty begged for a sausage and nearly pulled the table over. Then, the horse-drawn canal boats: what a treat. Gliding along at snail’s pace, with the Dee sparkling beside us, it was dead relaxing. We even hopped on the Llangollen Railway, the only standard gauge one in North Wales – puffing through tunnels and over viaducts, pint in hand, feeling like kids again.

Days blurred into easy bliss: museum hopping in town, where we geeked out over local history, and a mooch around Plas Newydd house with its wonky floors and grand views. We tackled gentle walks along the canal, Offa’s Dyke paths, and up towards the Berwyn Mountains – nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for cheese on toast back at the cottage. A quick jaunt to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (mind-blowing, that engineering marvel), Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall for a misty picnic, and Chirk Castle’s gardens rounded it off perfectly – all within a five-mile hop.

Reflecting on it now, sat back home with a cuppa, I realise it’s these little chaotic joys – the dog hair everywhere, the unplanned detours, the shared giggles – that make family breaks like this gold dust. No grand plans, just us, the Dee, and a whole lot of heart. If you’re after that relaxed North Wales vibe, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
