About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday hideaway on the edge of Little Stretton – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the Midlands turned into a comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers just as we hit the winding lanes of the Shropshire Hills, directing us down what felt like a sheep track masquerading as a road. My other half was gripping the dashboard, muttering about “one more pothole and I’m walking,” while I fumbled with a soggy map from the glovebox, pretending I knew where I was going. We arrived in a flap, hearts racing, with the car looking like it’d been mud-wrestling.

But oh, the first glimpse as we pulled up? Pure magic. This cosy studio-style annex tucked away on the outskirts, bang in the Shropshire Hills AONB, with those fabulous country views stretching out like a postcard. We tumbled out, laughing at our dishevelled state, and the anticipation that’d been bubbling all week hit full force. Stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm hug – ground-floor utility room first, bless it, with a washer/dryer that was a godsend for our travel-rumpled clothes. We chucked everything in and headed up the stairs, already plotting a cuppa.

Up on the first floor, the open-plan living space opened up with those brilliant Velux windows flooding everything with light. The views? Stunning – rolling hills as far as the eye could see, perfect for that “escape from it all” vibe we’d been craving. The kitchen was a dream too, well-equipped with all the bits you need, including a dishwasher that promised no post-dinner squabbles. We cracked open a bottle of wine right there, toasting our chaotic arrival, and just soaked it in. First impressions? Spot on. It was compact but clever, ideal for us two, with everything feeling fresh and inviting.

That evening, we wandered a short stroll to the village – Little Stretton’s got that proper rural charm, a cosy pub within easy reach for a pint and some hearty scran. No need to venture far; the area’s trails right on the doorstep called to us the next morning. We ambled up into the hills, breathing in that crisp air, spotting buzzards overhead. Lunch was a simple picnic thrown together in the kitchen – nothing fancy, but tasting all the better for it.

Looking back, that mishap of a journey was the perfect icebreaker, reminding me how these little getaways aren’t about polished perfection. They’re about the unexpected laughs and those quiet moments staring out the Velux at the sunset, feeling properly unwound. If you’re after a serene bolthole for two in this neck of the woods, you won’t go wrong here. We left buzzing to return, chaos and all.
