About North Wales
By the time I rolled into town, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you’re starving, desperate for a cuppa, and half-expecting the place to be a let-down after the photos. But pulling up to this charming, newly refurbished duplex apartment right in the heart of Porthmadog was a total win. Tucked away on a private estate, it’s got these cracking harbour views one way and peeks at the Ffestiniog Railway and river estuary the other. Central but cosy, like it’s winking at you to come explore. First impressions? Spot on – comfy, modern vibes with everything you need, and that view had me grinning like an idiot before I’d even unpacked. The real magic, though, kicked off the next morning when I decided to ditch the obvious tourist traps and just wander. Porthmadog’s got its famous spots, sure, but I’m all about those accidental finds, the ones you stumble on when you take a wrong path – or in my case, when you’re too nosy to stick to the map. I headed out along the harbour path, figuring I’d grab a pasty from the high street, but got properly lost weaving through the back lanes behind the estate. Ended up at this tucked-away pebble beach no bigger than a postage stamp, where the water laps right up to the harbour wall and seals were bobbing about like they owned the place. Sat there with my coffee, watching fishing boats chug out – pure bliss, and not a soul in sight. That set the tone for the week: embracing the lost-and-found vibe. One afternoon, faffing about near the estuary, I veered off down a footpath that looked dodgy but promising. It spat me out at a wild little woodland spot by the river, alive with birdsong and bluebells – miles from the steam trains rattling by on the main line. Felt like I’d nicked a secret from the locals. Another gem was stumbling on this old smugglers’ cove just a short amble from the estate, hidden by dunes and perfect for a solo paddle in the shallows. I even managed to get lost on purpose one evening, looping through the quiet lanes to find a hole-in-the-wall chippy that does the crispiest batter I’ve tasted in ages. Looking back, that initial wrong turn was a gentle nudge from the universe, wasn’t it? Here I was, thinking I’d planned the perfect break, but it was the unplanned detours that made it unforgettable. North Wales has this knack for rewarding the wanderers – those off-the-beaten-track nooks that feel like they’re just for you. If you’re after a holiday where getting lost leads to the best stories, this is your spot. I’m already plotting a return. |
