About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to Nantwich last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect coppery gold, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and the family piled into the car from Manchester, kids buzzing in the back with snacks flying everywhere. About halfway, disaster struck: a massive flock of starlings decided to swoop right across the windscreen, leaving us splattered in what felt like abstract art. We pulled over for a frantic wipe-down with baby wipes, laughing till our sides hurt. “Welcome to birdwatching season,” I quipped, scraping off the last bit while the October sun dipped low, painting everything in that soft, hazy light.

By the time we rolled into town, anticipation was peaking – Nantwich in autumn is pure magic, with the air crisp and that unmistakable scent of woodsmoke mingling with fallen leaves. Spotting the charming first-floor apartment right in the heart of it all, near a cosy local pub, had us grinning ear to ear. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm hug – two inviting bedrooms (one a comfy king that could twin up if needed, the other a sweet twin setup), and a bathroom with a proper bath and handheld shower that screamed “relax after a day out.” Pet-friendly too, which was a godsend for our two waggy-tailed troublemakers. It was the ideal family bolthole, all cosy and unpretentious.

Autumn shaped every minute of our stay. Mornings started with frosty windows framing the Shropshire Union Canal, where we’d wander down to watch narrowboats chug by, their chimneys puffing like little steam trains. The season’s mellow vibe meant fewer crowds, just us crunching through leaves along the Riverside Walk, the kids collecting conkers like treasure. One hilarious moment: I slipped on a slick pile of wet ones, arms windmilling like a cartoon character, only to land bum-first in a puddle. The family howled – “Dad’s auditioning for the mud pack spa!” – and it became our trip’s running joke.

We timed outings perfectly with the cooler weather. A brisk hike to Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker was eerie and brilliant, the chill air making the underground tours feel even more spine-tingling, like stepping into a Cold War thriller. Back in town, Nantwich’s autumn market was in full swing – stalls groaning with pumpkin soups, toffee apples, and hot chestnuts that warmed our hands as we munched. Evenings were for pub grub at the nearby spot, mulled cider steaming in tankards, while the apartment’s snug setup let us huddle with board games as rain pattered outside.

Reflecting on it now, that seasonal shift hit me gently one misty morning by the canal. Life’s been a whirl lately, but watching the leaves drift lazily, I realised how autumn strips things back – no summer frenzy, just quiet joys like a perfect cuppa and family giggles. It reminded me to slow down, breathe in the damp earthiness, and appreciate these pockets of peace. We left Nantwich reluctantly, hearts full and wellies muddy, already plotting a return for next year’s golden glow. What a getaway.
