We’d been on the road from Manchester for what felt like half a lifetime, the sat-nav cheerfully promising “just twenty minutes” every time we hit another tractor. By the time we finally turned off the A497 and nosed down the narrow lane towards the cottage, everyone was grumpy and the dog had claimed the entire back seat. The sat-nav then decided our postcode didn’t exist, so we overshot the turning completely and ended up wedged in a farm gateway while a helpful sheep watched us reverse.

When we finally pulled up, the cottage looked exactly like the pictures—neat white render, slate roof, a little gravel parking spot right outside. The key safe was where the host had promised, and the door swung open to that lovely cool hush you only get in old stone walls. Inside, the kitchen smelled faintly of lemon cleaner and sea air, and the living room already had the log burner laid ready. Upstairs the three bedrooms were simple and spotless, the biggest one catching a slice of glittering water between the rooftops.

We dumped bags, let the dog out into the tiny back garden, and wandered the fifty yards down to the beach path. The tide was out, the sand still damp and rippled, and a handful of locals were walking their own dogs along the edge of the water. It felt suddenly, blessedly quiet after the motorway. Back at the cottage we made tea in mismatched mugs and sat on the low wall outside, watching the light slide off the hills.

I’d spent the whole drive fretting about whether the place would feel cramped or damp, whether the beds would be lumpy, whether we’d regret not booking somewhere flashier. Sitting there with salt on my lips and the dog already asleep at my feet, it struck me that none of that really mattered. We’d arrived tired, taken a wrong turn, and still managed to land somewhere that already felt like it could be ours for the week.
