About North Wales
The garden sloped gently toward a low stone wall, and beyond it the sand stretched in a pale ribbon to the water. We didn’t even bother unpacking properly; we just dropped bags in the hallway, grabbed the nearest mugs, and carried them straight outside. The deck chairs were already set facing the view, as if the owners knew exactly how little we intended to do. Within minutes we were both barefoot, toes buried in warm grass, listening to nothing more urgent than the occasional gull and the soft hush of waves. That first afternoon set the tone for everything that followed. We wandered the short path to the beach, shoes in hand, and spent an hour simply standing at the tideline while the water crept over our ankles. Back at the cottage the kitchen opened onto a sunny patio, so breakfasts became leisurely affairs of toast eaten in pyjamas, coffee cooling beside a half-read paperback. One morning I tried to be productive and opened my laptop, only to close it again when a shaft of sunlight landed squarely on the screen; the cottage, it seemed, had its own ideas about work. Most days blurred together in the nicest way. We’d amble down to the village shop for pastries, then settle on the sand with blankets and books, occasionally glancing up to watch a dinghy tack across the bay. The tide came and went without fanfare, and so did our plans. One cloudy spell sent us scurrying back to the living room, where the big windows still let in enough light to read by without switching anything on. Later the sun returned and we followed it outside again, content to do nothing more strenuous than debate which deck chair had the best view. By the third evening I caught myself checking the time less and less. The cottage’s gentle pace had worked its way under my skin; even the simple act of hanging a damp towel on the line felt like an event worth savouring. Standing at the wall as the light faded, I realised how rarely I let whole days pass without a list or a deadline. Here, the only schedule that mattered was the sun sliding behind the dunes and the quiet promise of another slow morning ahead. |
