I’d barely got the car off the A496 when the satnav decided to have a little joke at my expense. One minute we were following the signs for Tal-y-Bont, the next it was cheerfully announcing we’d arrived at a lay-by three fields back. By the time we’d turned round, the October drizzle had turned into proper rain and the wipers were working overtime. Still, when the cottage finally came into view—slate roof glistening, smoke already curling from the chimney—the mishap felt worth it.

The moment the door clicked shut behind us, the season took over. Outside the windows the sky was that moody North Walian grey that somehow makes every colour inside feel cosier. We’d chosen mid-week in the shoulder season on purpose, hoping for quieter beaches and lower prices, and the gamble paid off straight away. The little garden was scattered with wind-blown leaves, but the wood burner was already laid, and within ten minutes we had a proper blaze going. That first cup of tea, drunk while watching raindrops race down the glass, set the tone for the whole stay.

Because it was autumn, the light disappeared early, which suited us fine. By four o’clock the lamps were on and we were unpacking without the usual pressure to rush straight out again. The cottage felt like it had been waiting for exactly this kind of weather—thick curtains, a squishy sofa, and a kitchen stocked with enough mugs for the inevitable second and third brews. We wandered down to the beach just before dusk, coats zipped to the chin, and found the tide far out, the wet sand reflecting what was left of the day. A couple of locals were walking their dogs, but otherwise we had the stretch to ourselves. The air tasted properly salty, and the only sound was the occasional cry of a gull riding the wind.

Back at the cottage the heating had come on while we were out, and the contrast between the chilly dusk and the warm hallway made us both laugh. It was one of those small, ordinary pleasures that feel amplified when the evenings draw in. We cooked a simple supper using bits we’d picked up in Barmouth on the way—nothing fancy, just something hot to eat while the rain tapped on the roof. Later, sitting with our feet up, I found myself thinking how rarely I let the weather dictate the pace these days. Usually I’d be checking tide times and planning walks, but here the shorter days and cooler air had gently nudged us into slowing down without us even noticing.

By the time we turned in, the rain had eased to a soft patter. I lay awake for a while listening to it, grateful that a dodgy satnav and an autumn shower had conspired to deliver exactly the sort of unhurried start we’d needed.
