We'd been on the road for what felt like half a day, crawling through Welsh drizzle and endless roadworks, when the sat-nav decided to have a little joke at our expense. Just as we turned onto the lane that supposedly led to Haul A Gwynt, it cheerfully announced we'd "arrived" in the middle of a lay-by. My partner laughed, I muttered something unrepeatable, and we reversed back out like a pair of city folk who'd never seen a hedgerow before.

By the time we finally spotted the cottage, the rain had cleared and the afternoon sun was doing its best to look welcoming. The little whitewashed place sat just back from the road, its garden sloping gently toward the sea, and the first thing that struck me was how quiet it was. Not the polite quiet of a suburban street, but proper seaside hush, broken only by the occasional gull and the faint rush of waves. We parked on the gravel, hauled our bags up the short path, and stood for a moment just staring at the view. The beach stretched out below us in a wide, sandy sweep, the tide far enough out that a few people were already walking their dogs along the wet sand.

Inside, everything felt immediately homely. The kitchen was small but perfectly arranged, with a kettle that boiled in seconds and a window ledge just right for perching mugs while you watched the water. The living room had that slightly worn, well-loved look that always makes me relax faster than any fancy décor could. We dumped our coats on the sofa and opened the back door, letting in a rush of salty air that instantly made the long drive feel worth it.

I wandered out onto the little patio and realised my shoes were still damp from the lay-by incident. That tiny mishap had set the tone for the whole arrival: nothing had gone quite to plan, yet nothing felt like a problem. Standing there with the breeze on my face, I caught myself thinking how rarely we actually slow down enough to notice when a place simply feels right. The cottage didn't need to impress us; it just needed to be there, solid and unpretentious, with the sea doing most of the work. And as the light began to soften over the bay, I had the distinct feeling we'd picked exactly the right spot to do nothing much at all.
