The village has a restaurant, pub and lovely sandy beach which is suitable for swimming. About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to North Wales last month – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and a boot full of snacks for the kids. We’d left Manchester early, aiming to beat the traffic, but about halfway in, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to play chicken with us on one of those twisty A-roads near Dolgellau. I slammed on the brakes, heart in my mouth, and the thermos of tea went flying all over the dashboard. The kids thought it was hilarious, of course, yelling “Sheep apocalypse!” while I mopped up, muttering about rural hazards. Still, it broke the ice, and by the time we turned off onto that leafy lane in Talybont, four miles from Barmouth, I was buzzing with anticipation. What if it was a damp old place? But no – first glimpse was a belter: this cracking detached bungalow, smack in the middle of its own third-of-an-acre gardens, looking proper inviting with its manicured lawns and flowerbeds bursting with colour.

Stepping inside, I was chuffed to bits. It’s got that perfect blend of contemporary vibes and cosy cottage charm – think carefully picked furnishings that make you feel right at home without any fuss. The spacious kitchen/diner is a dream, loaded with all the mod cons you need, and a smart dining table for four that we barely used because, let’s face it, who wants to cook on holiday? The sitting room’s the real star, though: that sumptuous corner sofa practically swallowed us whole, with an electric fire flickering away and a Smart TV for lazy binge-watching. We dumped the bags and just... exhaled.

The joy of it all was doing sod all, really. After years of manic holidays – theme parks, hikes, the lot – this was our deliberate slowdown. Mornings started late, with me pottering in the kitchen for toast and coffee, then straight out to the garden. It’s massive and so well-kept, like someone’s labour of love. I’d flop into a lounger with a dog-eared paperback – some trashy crime novel I’d been saving – while the kids messed about on the grass, building dens from sticks or just chasing butterflies. The air smelled of sea salt from the nearby coast and cut grass, with birdsong for a soundtrack. Lunch? A picnic right there, cheese ploughman’s from the village shop, eaten under the apple tree. Afternoons blurred into dozing, reading, maybe a gentle wander up the lane to peek at the estuary views towards Barmouth. No schedules, no rush – just the tick of a clock that didn’t matter.

One evening, as the sun dipped low, painting the garden gold, I caught myself staring into space, mug of tea gone cold. Blimey, I thought, when did I last switch off like this? Work’s been a treadmill, life a whirl – but here, in this little pocket of Wales, I remembered how good it feels to just be. We did venture out once, to the beach at Talybont for a paddle and chips from the van, but mostly? Blissful inertia. No grand adventures, just recharging in the best way. If you’re after proper relaxation, find yourself a spot like this – it’ll do you the world of good.
