About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday bungalow near Betws yn Rhos – it was one of those classic North Wales trips where the sat-nav decides to play silly buggers. We’d set off from Cheshire full of beans, me behind the wheel with the missus navigating and the kids in the back glued to their tablets. But about halfway through the Clwydian hills, the heavens opened, turning the A55 into a proper skidpan. Then, disaster: a rogue sheep decided to dart across the road just outside Colwyn Bay, forcing me into an emergency swerve that sent our picnic hamper flying. Crisps everywhere, jam sandwiches splatted on the ceiling – chaos! The kids thought it was hilarious, calling it “sheepmageddon,” while I tried to look like the unflappable dad, mopping up yoghurt with a sock. By the time we turned off towards Abergele, we were all a bit frazzled, but the anticipation was building. Would this place live up to the pics? North Wales has a knack for stunning surprises, and I was itching for that first glimpse.

Pulling up to the detached bungalow after 4.5 miles of narrow lanes – still damp and sheep-dodging – we were greeted by this absolute gem tucked away in Conway County’s rolling countryside. First impressions? Blimey, better than I’d dared hope. It’s stylishly furnished with real attention to detail, all warm and welcoming luxury that screams “relax here, you’ve earned it.” We tumbled out of the car, still picking crisp crumbs from our laps, and stepped inside to an open layout that just hugs you. The bright, airy sitting room hit us first, with far-reaching views through the patio doors that made me gasp – green fields stretching out like a proper postcard. And that double-sided woodburner? Pure genius, warming the room and peeking into the dining area, ready for cosy evenings ahead. The kids immediately claimed the sofas, while I wandered into the kitchen, gobsmacked by the modern units and that spacious breakfast counter. Perfect for perching while someone (not me, obviously) rustles up supper.

We hadn’t even unpacked properly before the magic kicked in. I lit the woodburner – first time I’ve managed one without singeing my eyebrows – and we cracked open the emergency wine, toasting our survival of sheepmageddon. The place felt like home straight away, ideal for our family vibe. That evening, we ambled down to Betws yn Rhos village, just a stone’s throw, for a pint at the local and fish and chips that hit the spot after our soggy saga. Next morning, we were out exploring the coastal paths near Abergele, breathing in that crisp sea air, the bungalow’s views lingering in our minds.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker – a gentle reminder that holidays aren’t about perfection, but those shared laughs amid the madness. This spot gave us pure North Wales bliss: luxury without the fuss, memories in the making. If you’re after a family escape close to it all, you won’t go wrong here. We’re already plotting a return, minus the sheep this time.
