About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to North Wales last month – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from Cheshire turned into a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car with the kids, the dog, and enough snacks to feed a small army, but halfway through, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour down some narrow lane that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Then, just as we neared Abersoch, I misjudged a roundabout and ended up splashing through a massive puddle, soaking the windscreen and giving everyone a good laugh (or was that a groan?). By the time we pulled up to the cottage, we were all a bit frazzled, covered in crisp crumbs, and the dog had claimed shotgun on the boot space.

But oh, the first impressions? Absolute gold. There it was, this delightful detached cottage just a short stroll from Abersoch’s sandy beach, looking every bit the cosy haven we’d been dreaming of. We tumbled out, anticipation buzzing – I could already picture lazy beach days and sunset drinks. Unlocking the door felt like coming home; the inviting sitting room hit us first, with heaps of comfy seating that screamed ‘plonk down and relax’. Perfect for us lot, a family of six plus mates, as it easily fits eight without anyone perching on the armrest.

We dumped the bags and explored, still buzzing from the road chaos. The second sitting room was a godsend – a quiet nook for me to sneak off with a book while the kids claimed the telly. The modern kitchen gleamed with all the gadgets; I rustled up some tea straight away, no faffing about. Downstairs, the cloakroom and WC were spot on, and that boot room? Lifesaver after our muddy detour – wellies everywhere, no drama.

Upstairs, the four bedrooms were a treat: two doubles with en-suites (one peering cheekily towards the beach), and two twins, all cosy with a cracking family bathroom. We bagged rooms quick as a flash amid the unpacking scrum. Outside sealed the deal – a sunny front patio with seating for eight, ideal for barbecues or just chilling with a cold one. The hot tub round the side had us grinning like idiots; we fired it up that evening, bubbles and all. There’s decking with rattan chairs too, and a rear seating spot on the bank with killer views over the harbour, beach, and bay – Snowdonia peeking on a clear day. Magic.

That first evening, as we unwound in the hot tub, steam rising and the sun dipping low, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Here I was, knackered from the drive but buzzing with contentment, thinking how these little mishaps make the best stories. North Wales has that knack – turns chaos into charm. We spent the next days beachcombing at Abersoch, nipping to Pwllheli for fish and chips, and gentle walks along the bay, but honestly, it was the cottage that made it. Proper homely, well-equipped, and just what we needed. If you’re after a family or mates’ getaway, this spot’s a winner – book it, mishaps and all!
