About North Wales
We'd been dreaming of a proper getaway for months, just me and Sarah, escaping the daily grind for some proper downtime in North Wales. The drive up from the Midlands was meant to be a breeze, but typical us – about halfway there, I took a wrong turn onto some winding B-road that had us crawling behind a flock of sheep for what felt like hours. "This is it, our grand adventure," I joked, as Sarah snapped pics of the woolly traffic jam. Still, by the time we crested the hills into Church Stretton, the anticipation was buzzing – that mix of "what if it's rubbish?" and "please let this be perfect."

Pulling into the shared courtyard, we were gobsmacked. It's a beautifully appointed semi-detached barn conversion, all cosy and inviting, right on the edge of the village. First impressions? Spot on. The place wrapped us up like a warm hug – think plush sofas, a kitchen that begged for lazy breakfasts, and views over the Shropshire Hills that made you forget the sheep debacle instantly.

We wasted no time settling in. First morning, I fumbled the coffee machine like a right numpty, spilling grounds everywhere while Sarah laughed and sorted brekkie – proper cottage chaos, but the kind that makes you grin. Mugs in hand, we wandered out for a gentle stroll along the Long Mynd, that massive heathland plateau just up the road. The air was crisp, alive with skylarks, and we picked a easy path through purple heather, stopping for daft selfies with the ponies that roam free. No rushing, just us ambling, chatting about nothing and everything.

Afternoons were for pottering around Church Stretton itself – it's a cracking little town, dead central for nipping into quirky shops or grabbing pasties from the bakery. One day we hiked up to the Burway, that ancient drover's road with panoramas that stretch forever. The wind whipped our cheeks, and I had one of those moments, you know? Pausing there, hand in hers, I thought, "Blimey, we're in our forties now, but this – this simple stuff – it's what life's about. Not the promotions or the to-do lists, just breathing it all in."

Evenings back at the barn were pure bliss. We'd cobble together a stew from local veg from the farm shop down the lane, crack open a bottle of red, and flop in front of the telly or play cards till we nodded off. One night, a rogue mouse dashed across the floor – cue me leaping onto the sofa like a startled cat, Sarah in stitches. "Hero of the hour," she teased. Harmless pandemonium, that's the charm of these spots.

It wasn't flashy, but that's the point. No kids tearing about this time, just us two rediscovering that easy rhythm. If you're after a chilled couple's break amid epic walks and village vibes, this neck of North Wales – sorry, Shropshire borderlands – delivers every time. We left knackered but buzzing, already plotting the return. Proper tonic for the soul.
