About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in North Wales last autumn – the leaves were just turning that glorious mix of gold and copper, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and the family piled into the car from Shropshire, kids buzzing in the back with crisps and iPads, while I navigated those twisty lanes through Powys. About halfway, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with our bumper, sending us into a frantic swerve and a quick pit stop to check for feathers. Heart racing, but no harm done – just a good laugh and a reminder that rural Wales keeps you on your toes.

By the time we trundled down the farm track, past fields dotted with sheep eyeing us curiously, the anticipation was palpable. I’d been dreaming of this escape for weeks, picturing cosy evenings as the days drew in. Pulling onto the spacious driveway, we were gobsmacked by the charming blue exterior of this two-storey home, idyllically tucked on peaceful farmland just outside the quaint village of Pennant, a mere 4.9 miles from Llanbrynmair. It slept us eight comfortably, spread over two floors – perfect for our lot, with space to sprawl without tripping over each other.

Stepping inside, the first impressions were spot on: warm and inviting, like the house itself was shrugging off the crisp October chill. Autumn shaped every bit of our stay, from the morning mists rolling over the hills that made brewing tea in the kitchen feel like a scene from a Brontë novel, to the golden hour sunsets painting the farmland in hues that had us all glued to the windows. We didn’t venture far – no need, really. A short stroll from the door took us into the heart of the countryside, where the season’s bounty meant blackberrying along the hedgerows (pies for days!) and crunching through leaf piles with the little ones, their wellies caked in mud by teatime.

One afternoon, we wandered over to nearby Pennant’s old chapel ruins, the air sharp with that earthy, damp scent that only Welsh autumn delivers. It was quiet, save for the rustle of wind through the trees – pure bliss after the school run chaos. Evenings were for firing up the oven with local spuds and cheese from the village shop, then huddling for board games as rain pattered on the roof. Hafren Forest was a quick hop away, its paths carpeted in fallen leaves, perfect for a family ramble where we spotted deer and gathered conkers like it was Bonfire Night prep.

Looking back, that gentle self-reflection hit me on our last morning: amid the harvest colours and slowing pace, I realised how the season forced us to unplug. No rushing about – just being, in a place that felt worlds away from everyday grind. North Wales in autumn? It’s magic, that slow unfurling of peace. If you’re after a rural retreat near Cardigan Bay’s edge without the crowds, this corner near Llanbrynmair nails it. We’re already plotting a return for next year’s foliage frenzy.
