About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday cottage near Pentraeth on the Isle of Anglesey – it was mid-autumn, you see, with those crisp October leaves swirling like confetti across the A55, and me cursing under my breath when we hit a cheeky diversion sign just past Bangor. Turned out it was roadworks for some bridge maintenance, and there we were, me, the missus, and the two lads, crawling along at snail’s pace while the sea sparkled mockingly to our right. I’d built it up in my head all week, picturing that perfect escape from the daily grind, and now we were late, stomachs rumbling. But honestly, by the time we crested that final hill, the anticipation melted into pure relief – the island unfolded before us like a golden postcard, all russet hedges and distant Snowdonia peaks dusted with early frost.

Pulling up to the cottage, we were gobsmacked – it’s this cosy gem tucked just outside the bustling village of Pentraeth, all welcoming lights glowing against the fading dusk. First impressions? Spot on. We stepped into a well-appointed kitchen at the front, high ceilings making it feel airy despite the chill outside, with stylish units, a dishwasher humming happily, and a dining area begging for a family feast. Through to the large sitting room, we flopped onto the sofa, the woodburning stove already crackling away – pure bliss as the autumn evening nipped at the windows. Upstairs, three king-size bedrooms awaited, one with that clever zip-and-link setup for the kids, each with en-suites that felt like a proper treat, deluxe and steamy after a day’s chill.

Autumn shaped every bit of it, didn’t it? Mornings started with mist rolling off the Menai Strait, just a short hop away, turning our walks along Red Wharf Bay into something magical – sand all crisp and empty, waves whispering under overcast skies, perfect for skimming stones without a soul in sight. We’d bundle up in coats and wellies, the lads charging ahead to poke at rock pools teeming with crabs hiding from the brisk wind. One afternoon, we wandered the couple of miles into Pentraeth itself, its high street buzzing with locals in scarves, grabbing fresh scones from the bakery that tasted even better with the season’s bramble jam. Back at the cottage, we’d light the stove early, simmering stews in that cracking kitchen while the rain pattered softly – no rushing about, just proper hygge vibes as the days shortened.

There was this one moment, staring into the flames one night after the boys crashed out, when I had a proper think. Work’s been mad lately, you know? Always chasing the next deadline. But here, with the woodsmoke curling up and the island hushed under a blanket of stars peeking through thinning clouds, I realised how rare it is to just… stop. Laugh at the lads’ daft jokes over board games, hold hands with her without glancing at the clock. Autumn’s got that way about it – stripping things back, making you grateful for the warmth inside.

We packed up too soon, but those few days? Golden. If you’re after a North Wales getaway where the season does the heavy lifting, find a spot like this. You won’t regret it.
