About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday spot in North Wales – it was one of those journeys that starts off promising but quickly turns into a comedy of errors. We’d set off from Shropshire early, me at the wheel with the satnav chirping away like an overexcited budgie, and my partner fiddling with the playlist. But about halfway in, just as the hills started rolling in, we hit a proper downpour. Proper Welsh weather, that – one minute blue skies, the next you’re wipers on full blast, squinting at signs half-hidden by sheeting rain. Then came the mishap: a rogue sheep decided to photobomb the road right in front of us. I slammed on the brakes, heart in my mouth, and we skidded just enough to make the tyres squeal. No harm done, but it left us laughing nervously, with the car smelling faintly of wet wool after I’d shooed the fluffy intruder off.

By the time we turned off the main road towards Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant, about five and a half miles from our destination, I was buzzing with that arrival anticipation you get after a long drive. You know the feeling – imagining cosying up with a cuppa, feet up, forgetting the world. Pulling into the Powys countryside, the rain eased off, revealing these lush fields stretching out like a green blanket. And there it was: our detached cottage, one of a handful tucked away on this 300-acre estate. It’s got that perfect contemporary vibe inside a classic rural setting – just right for us two wanting a romantic breather.

Stepping through the door, still a bit damp and dishevelled from the sheep drama, the first impressions hit like a warm hug. Up the stairs to the open-plan living space on the first floor, and blimey, those views over the open fields were stunning – rolling hills dotted with sheep (ironic, that), and the light streaming in as the clouds parted. We dumped the bags and headed straight for the kitchen; it’s kitted out with everything you’d need and then some – sleek hob, massive fridge, even a fancy coffee machine that had me grinning like a kid at Christmas. I rustled up some pasta while we cracked open a bottle of wine, toasting our chaotic arrival. The layout’s a bit quirky, but it works a treat, making the space feel airy and intimate all at once.

That first evening, we wandered a short way onto the estate’s grounds – proper peaceful, with paths winding through the fields, the air crisp and full of that earthy scent after rain. Spotted a few birds I couldn’t name, but it didn’t matter; it was just us, no rush, no emails pinging. Sat outside as the sun dipped, watching the sky turn pink, and I had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection: how often do we city folk forget to slow down? Here, five minutes from the road, it’s like time stretches out. The mishaps made it all the sweeter – turned a soggy start into our own little adventure. If you’re after a cosy escape with cracking walks on your doorstep and a spot that feels like home (but better), this is it. Can’t wait to go back.
