About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in North Wales – we’d packed the car to the gills with wellies, board games, and enough crisps to siege a castle, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Aberystwyth. It rerouted us down a narrow lane that seemed to shrink by the second, branches scraping the roof like it was auditioning for a horror film. Heart in mouth, we emerged unscathed, but I was already chuckling at my daft optimism: “This’ll be an adventure!” Little did I know, getting lost would become the highlight.

Pulling up to the place, my anticipation turned to pure delight. It’s this luxurious, spacious farmhouse, thoughtfully rebuilt for comfort – three cosy bedrooms, a family bathroom, and a slick kitchen with a breakfast nook that flows into a sitting room complete with dining space. The views across the river valley are mesmerising, and that woodburner? Pure bliss for evenings in. Downstairs shower room before slipping into the hot tub with those valley vistas – honestly, it felt like we’d stumbled into someone’s dream pad. The riverside garden, with gated access to the bank, seals it; sunset unwinding there after a day out is magic.

We wasted no time diving into the area’s hidden gems, the kind you only find by veering off the map. First mishap-led discovery was a tucked-away spot along the Rheidol – we’d aimed for a quick riverside stroll but took a wrong turn onto a footpath that hugged the water. Ended up at this secret cascade, not a soul around, just us picnicking on cheese rolls while the kids skimmed stones. Laughed till we cried when I slipped on moss – classic me, always the clown.

Next day, fancying the Cambrian Mountains but shunning the tourist traps, we followed a whim up a single-track road from Capel Bangor. Got properly lost in the best way, winding through forests that opened to a wildflower meadow with a shepherd’s bothy ruin. Parked up, brewed tea on a camp stove, and watched buzzards soar. It was one of those moments that stopped me in my tracks – sat there thinking, why do I ever rush life back home? This unhurried magic, courtesy of a dodgy map reading, was gold.

Even closer, a riverside amble gone awry led to a forgotten picnic glade by the Rheidol, shaded by ancient trees, perfect for paddling. The other half found a wild garlic patch (we foraged responsibly, promise), turning dinner into a gourmet triumph. And that hot tub soak post-excursion? Heavenly, valley lights twinkling as we recounted our “disasters.”

Our stay was a lesson in serendipity – those off-the-beaten-track finds, born from getting lost, made it unforgettable. North Wales has this knack for rewarding the wanderers. Can’t wait to return and lose ourselves again.
