About North Wales
We'd been dreaming of a quiet getaway to North Wales for ages, just me, my wife Sarah, and our two cheeky Labradors, Monty and Bess. The drive up from Shropshire was meant to be a breeze, but typical us – about 20 miles from the turn-off, I missed the exit for Welshpool and ended up looping through some winding lanes that had the sat-nav throwing a proper wobbly. "Recalculating," it kept chirping, while Sarah laughed and said I drive like her grandad on a Sunday outing. By the time we rattled into the outskirts of this sleepy village in Powys, we were starving and the dogs were whining for a wee.

Pulling up to the place, though, all that faded away. Tucked away in a peaceful rural spot just a couple of miles from Montgomery, it was this lovely barn conversion that hit us with instant wow-factor. The moment we stepped down from the hallway into the open-plan kitchen-diner, it felt like home – light and airy, with a smart shaker-style kitchen and this massive wooden dining table surrounded by posh upholstered chairs. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local cider we'd picked up en route, and just soaked it in. Perfect first impressions, honestly.

The next few days were pure cottage life bliss, the sort of relaxed family break we'd been craving. Mornings kicked off with brekkie at that grand table – Sarah whipping up scrambled eggs on toast while I brewed tea strong enough to strip paint. Then we'd amble out for gentle walks around Llandyssil's quiet lanes, the dogs bounding ahead through wildflower meadows, tails wagging like mad. One afternoon, we wandered the couple of miles into Montgomery village – what a gem. Cobbled streets, a proper old market square with a handful of tearooms, and that ancient castle ruin peering over the rooftops. We grabbed pasties from the bakery and picnicked on the grassy banks, watching the world go by. No rush, no plans, just us lot mooching about.

Of course, there was the classic holiday chaos. Monty decided the plush sofa was his new throne and shed fur everywhere like confetti at a wedding. Sarah caught me sneaking extra biscuits from the Range we'd stocked up in Welshpool, calling me out with a grin: "You're worse than the dogs!" Evenings were for lazy suppers – think hearty Welsh lamb stew simmered on the hob, followed by board games that descended into giggles and mild arguments over Monopoly rules. One night, stargazing from the garden, we spotted a shooting star; Sarah made a wish for more of this simple stuff, and I couldn't agree more.

Looking back, it was those little pleasures that made it – the anticipation building on the drive turning into this warm, unhurried bubble away from the daily grind. I caught myself reflecting one quiet morning over coffee, staring out at the rolling fields: life's too short not to chase more of these daft, joyful escapes. If you're after a cosy couple's retreat with pets in tow (and a side of lovingly chaotic fun), this neck of North Wales is spot on. We're already plotting a return.
