About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in North Wales – or rather, the comedy of errors that got us there. We’d piled into the car from Manchester early Saturday morning, me navigating on my phone while my mate Dave drove, and the kids in the back already squabbling over crisps. Satnav was fine until we hit those twisty lanes near the border, and then – disaster. A sheep decided to stage a sit-in right in the middle of the road, staring us down like it owned the place. Dave brakes hard, I spill my tea all over the passenger seat, and the dog launches himself into my lap, barking his head off. Cue ten minutes of honking, gentle shooing (no way were we harming the fluffy blocker), and me frantically mopping up with baby wipes. By the time we’d persuaded it to amble off, we were all laughing hysterically, but late and a bit frazzled.

Still, as we finally trundled up the drive to this cracking converted barn – proudly awarded Sykes Gem Awards 2025 Bronze for Best Longstanding Property – all that arrival chaos melted away. Tucked into 250 acres of peaceful Shropshire farmland in the scenic Hope Valley, it looked every bit the cosy countryside haven we’d been dreaming of. I’d been buzzing with anticipation the whole way, picturing lazy evenings with a brew and epic views, and blimey, it didn’t disappoint. The place blends that old-school charm with proper modern touches – think plush en-suites in every room, and shared access to a games room and gym that had the kids whooping before we’d even unpacked.

First impressions? Spot on. We stepped inside to warm welcomes from the owners, who handed over keys with a cheery “Make yourselves at home.” The living space was light and airy, perfect for kicking back, and out the back, that lovely patio garden with its bubbling hot tub overlooked rolling fields that stretched for miles. We cracked open a few tins straight away, feet up, watching the sun dip low – pure magic after our sheep saga. The hot tub was calling, but we held off for a mo, letting the littluns burn off steam in the games room first. Table football turned into a full-on tournament, with Dave hilariously trash-talking his own seven-year-old and losing spectacularly.

It got me reflecting a bit, actually. Holidays like this always remind me how the best memories come from the daft bits – that spilled tea and stubborn sheep made the arrival feel like an adventure, not just a check-in. No five-star hotel gloss here; it’s real, relaxed vibes for families or mates wanting to unwind. We spent the first evening grilling bangers on the patio, stars popping out overhead, and plotting walks around the Hope Valley trails the next day – nothing too strenuous, mind, with a pub stop thrown in. Craven Arms village is just down the road, with its cosy locals and a chippy that smelled divine as we drove past. By bedtime, hot tub bubbling away for tomorrow, we were already plotting a return. If you’re after a proper escape without the hassle, this is it – mishaps and all.
