About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our little holiday cottage in North Wales – satnav insisting we were nearly there, then bam, a cheeky sheep decided to play roadblock right in the middle of a narrow lane near Llangollen. Heart in my mouth, I eased the car to a stop while it gave me a blank stare before trotting off. Typical, eh? But that minor drama only ramped up the anticipation. As we wound down into the valley, the Dee River sparkling below and those epic hills rising up, I could already picture cosy evenings with a brew, far from the daily grind.

Pulling up to the cottage – a proper quaint two-bed number with a welcoming vibe and valley views that hit you straight away – we were grinning like kids. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like our own secret hideaway, tucked away enough to promise peace but close to everything we fancied exploring. Unpacked in a flash, boots on, and we were off, no grand plans, just a vague notion to wander.

That’s when the magic kicked in. Instead of ticking off the obvious spots, we let ourselves get properly lost – and North Wales rewarded us with these absolute hidden gems you’d never find on a tourist map. First afternoon, aiming for a riverside stroll, we took a wrong turn down a unmarked track off the canal path. Ended up at this tiny, overgrown picnic spot by a weir we had all to ourselves. The water rushing over the rocks, herons dipping in for fish – pure bliss. Laughed about how I’d probably have scrolled past it on my phone back home, too busy chasing likes.

Next day, same story. Aiming for a gentle hike, we veered off the main path near the valley’s edge onto what looked like a sheep trail. Blimey, it led to this forgotten little waterfall, barely a trickle on the map but thundering after recent rain. Sat there with sandwiches, feet dangling over the edge, feeling a proper twit for ever thinking holidays needed schedules. Got me reflecting, you know? Life’s so rushed usually – work emails at dawn, that sort of nonsense. Here, stumbling on these off-the-beaten-track treasures by accident made me realise how much joy’s in the unplanned detours.

Evenings back at the cottage, we’d pore over soggy Ordnance Survey maps (who needs apps?), plotting the next ‘lost’ adventure. One led to a secluded bench overlooking the river bend, perfect for sunset gins. Another to a wildflower meadow buzzing with butterflies, hidden behind a drystone wall we nearly missed. No crowds, no coach parties – just us, the hills, and that satisfying ache in the legs from real exploring.

By the end of the week, we’d mapped our own mental guide to Llangollen’s secret corners, all discovered by happy accident. Packing up felt bittersweet, but driving off with sheep-mishap stories and a pocketful of memories? Worth every twisty mile. If you’re after a break that recharges the soul, get yourself lost in North Wales – you won’t regret it.
