About North Wales
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in North Wales – a proper comedy of errors from the off. We’d piled into the car back in Manchester, kids buzzing with excitement, me navigating on my phone while my other half drove. But oh no, halfway through Shropshire, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly. It sent us down some tiny lane that turned into a muddy track, and before we knew it, we were stuck behind a flock of sheep being herded by a farmer on a quad bike. Twenty minutes of bleating chaos later, we finally emerged, covered in a fine layer of muck, laughing our heads off. “Welcome to the countryside,” I quipped, wiping sheep poo off the windscreen.

By the time we rolled up to the barn conversion on the outskirts of Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant, about 1.8 miles from the village, we were knackered but buzzing with anticipation. I’d been dreaming of this tranquil escape for weeks – no city noise, just us, some peace, and hopefully a decent cuppa. Pulling onto the spacious driveway, surrounded by lush lawns, my first thought was, “Blimey, this is posh.” We clambered up the steps to the private decking, and there it was: alfresco dining set up and a hot tub looking all sumptuous under the late afternoon sun. I could already picture us bubbling away under the stars that night. The enclosed garden round the back promised total privacy – perfect for the kids to run wild without me yelling every five minutes.

Stepping inside, we were hit with that wow moment. The open-plan living space felt so welcoming, with a massive plush corner sofa begging us to flop down in front of the wall-mounted Smart TV. There was even a covered woodburning stove ready to roar, all in this cosy, characterful vibe that screamed “relax here.” We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of fizz (non-alcoholic for the little ones), and just soaked it in. First impressions? Spot on. After the road trip farce, it was like arriving at a hug.

That evening, we fired up the hot tub – pure bliss after the sheep saga. The kids splashed about, my partner and I sipped wine, gazing at the open countryside views. It got me reflecting a bit, you know? Life’s always rushing us along, full of little mishaps like that daft detour, but spots like this remind you to slow down, breathe, and make memories. We wandered into Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant the next morning for a pub lunch – proper hearty Welsh fare, bacon baps all round – and mooched about the quiet lanes, spotting buzzards overhead. Even nipped to the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall nearby, a stunning cascade that’s one of the highest in Wales. Felt like our own secret paradise.

Honestly, if you’re after a stylish, family-friendly bolt-hole with cracking first impressions despite a bumpy arrival, this is it. We left feeling recharged, already plotting our return. North Wales, you’ve won us over.
