About 1 Gloucester Way.

Pembroke Dock (Doc Penfro), northwest of Pembroke town centre, nestles beside the River Cleddau. Larger than Pembroke, it boasts pubs, restaurants, shops, parks, a train station, heritage centre, and historic Royal Navy Dockyard from the 1800s. Cross Cleddau Bridge to Neyland's sports clubs and yacht marina. Stroll to Pembroke's tourist hub: Henry VII's castle ruins, surfing, rowing, West Angle Bay, or lobster at Café Mor on Freshwater West. Nearby: serene Milford Haven and lively Haverfordwest. Ideal base for exploring Pembrokeshire.

About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembroke Dock – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Carmarthen, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping down a muddy farm track. We ended up wedged behind a flock of sheep, me frantically reversing while the kids laughed their heads off in the back. Typical me, thinking I’d be the cool dad with the scenic route. But honestly, that little mishap set the tone for the whole trip – a bit chaotic, but full of unexpected laughs and discoveries.

By the time we rolled into the quaint town, the clouds had parted, and there it was: this cracking holiday home, all cosy and welcoming in that classic Pembrokeshire style. Perfect for our family of four plus the two daft dogs who’d been cooped up in the car. Stepping inside felt like a proper hug – open-plan living space with a kitchen begging for a fry-up, dining spot right by the Smart TV for binge-watching sessions, and three comfy bedrooms upstairs that promised proper kip after days out. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and gazed out at the gentle buzz of Pembroke Dock, already buzzing with that arrival buzz – you know, that fizzy excitement of “what’s around the corner?”

We didn’t stick to the tourist traps. Nah, our best finds came from getting properly lost, which is my specialty. First afternoon, we wandered off the high street, dogs on leads, and stumbled into this tucked-away cove just a short stroll away – not on any map I’d seen, but with sand so soft it swallowed your trainers and seals barking like they were auditioning for a wildlife doc. The kids built epic sandcastles while I skimmed stones, feeling a proper twit when one ricocheted back and nearly clocked me. Hilarious, really – a reminder that I’m no David Beckham with a pebble.

Next day, aiming for the marina (handy for popping out on a boat trip, by the way), we took a “shortcut” through winding lanes and ended up at this hidden woodland spot by the estuary. Overgrown paths led to a pebbly beach where the water lapped so calmly you could paddle for hours. We picnicked there – cheese sarnies from the local shop – spotting herons and even a fox darting off. No crowds, just us and the dogs chasing sticks like loons. It made me pause for a sec, sitting on a driftwood log, thinking how these accidental detours beat any guidebook. Life’s too short for sticking to the script, innit? We’re always rushing about back home; here, getting lost felt like the point.

Evenings back at the house were bliss – cooking up pasta storms in that brilliant kitchen, then flopping in front of the telly with the dogs sprawled out. One night, we ventured to a nearby hidden gem pub (locals only vibe, discovered by sheer fluke), supping pints of Brains while swapping stories with fishermen. Pembroke Dock’s got that unpretentious charm – close enough for a quick ferry glimpse across to Ireland if you fancy, but we stayed local, unearthing quiet spots like the secret tidal pools perfect for crabbing with the nippers.

Those few days wandering off-piste were pure magic. If you’re after South Pembrokeshire’s real soul, ditch the maps and let the lanes lead you. We left with muddy boots, full bellies, and memories that’ll have us plotting the next “lost” adventure already.
