About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – a proper British road trip, innit? We piled into the car in Cardiff, full of sandwiches and podcasts, aiming for this little holiday cottage near Narberth. About halfway, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to play chicken with us on a narrow lane. I slammed the brakes, heart in my mouth, and we all burst out laughing as it trotted off like it owned the place. “Welcome to Wales,” my mate quipped. Delayed by 20 minutes and a bit of sheep-induced therapy, we finally rolled up, buzzing with that arrival anticipation – you know, when everything’s about to get brilliant.

First impressions? Spot on. Tucked on a working farm with three other cottages dotted around, it felt like our own private slice of countryside heaven, just two miles from Narberth’s lively high street. We parked up, unloaded in seconds, and there it was: a splendid, cosy cottage that screamed “relax here forever.” No grand entrance needed; it just wrapped you in that welcoming vibe straight away.

But honestly, the joy of the whole trip was doing sod all – and I mean that in the best possible way. After years of frantic holidays – theme parks, hikes, the lot – this was my gentle nudge to slow right down. We’d flop into the garden first thing, mugs of tea in hand, watching the farmer’s lambs gambolling about like they were auditioning for a spring advert. The sun would filter through the hedges, and I’d crack open a book – some daft crime novel I’d been saving. Hours vanished. No agenda, no alarms. Just the rustle of pages and the odd bleat from the field.

Lazy lunches were a highlight: we’d wander into Narberth for local cheeses, fresh bread from the indie bakers, and a pork pie that was basically a hug in pastry form. Back at the cottage, we’d sprawl on the garden chairs, picking at it all while chatting nonsense. One afternoon, I caught myself staring at a butterfly on the lavender – proper mindfulness without trying. “You’ve turned into David Attenborough,” my other half teased. Fair play; it was that kind of place.

Evenings were pure bliss. Fire lit (okay, we cheated with the gas one), a bottle of Welsh red, and more reading by the window. The distant hum of the farm was our soundtrack – tractors puttering, cows lowing softly. No need for Tenby’s beaches or Saundersfoot’s harbour that week; they’re a quick drive if you fancy, but why rush? Narberth’s galleries and eateries tempted us once or twice for a mooch and a cream tea, but mostly, we stayed put. Walks? Maybe a gentle potter around the farm tracks at dusk, breathing in that salty coastal air that sneaks over from the Pembrokeshire path nearby.

Looking back, it was the perfect reset. In a world that’s all go-go-go, this cottage taught me the sheer luxury of lingering. No FOMO, no itineraries – just us, the garden, and a stack of books. If you’re after proper downtime with a side of farmyard charm, get yourself here. I’m already plotting a return.
