About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Cardiff turned into a comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us down some narrow lane that felt more like a sheep’s personal runway. We ended up with a flock blocking the way, and me frantically reversing while the kids in the back chanted “baa-baa black sheep” like it was the end times. By the time we spotted the turn-off for Saint Florence, I was questioning my life choices, sweating more than on a Welsh summer hike.

But oh, pulling into that little village along the River Ritec? Pure magic. The anticipation had been building all week – visions of coastal breezes and lazy beach days – and it didn’t disappoint. Our three-bed cottage popped into view like something out of a postcard: cosy, welcoming, with that perfect holiday vibe that screams “relax now, adult later”. First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and the kids immediately dashed to the garden, yelling about space to kick a ball without the neighbour’s cat glaring. I stood there, key in hand, taking a deep breath of that fresh sea-tinged air, thinking, “Yep, we’ve nailed this one.”

Inside, it was all we needed – comfy spots to flop, a kitchen that didn’t look like it’d survived a war, and enough room for us lot not to trip over each other. We’d barely unpacked when the real fun kicked off. A quick wander down to the river had us spotting ducks paddling about, and the peace was bliss after our road saga. Tenby’s just four miles up the road, so we hopped in the car (praying no more sheep ambushes) and hit the golden beaches that afternoon. The harbour’s a riot of colour, boats bobbing, and we grabbed fish and chips that were so good, I nearly proposed to the wrapper. The kids built sandcastles fit for kings while I sipped a coffee, watching the world go by.

Next morning, we ventured to Manorbier, three miles away – that clifftop castle is dramatic as anything, looming over a sandy bay that begged for paddling. We spent hours there, skimishing stones and pretending we were medieval knights (me in wellies, naturally). Laughter echoed off the rocks, and for a moment, I reflected on how these simple spots recharge the soul. Back at the cottage, we lit the barbecue – slight mishap with the wind nearly blowing the lot into the river, mind – and tucked into local treats, toasting our chaotic arrival.

Family-wise, it’s heaven: Manor Wildlife Park and Heatherton are barely a mile off, perfect for animal encounters and go-kart thrills without the long schlep. Walkers like me hit the local trails, those coastal paths winding like nature’s own playground. Saint Florence wrapped us in its gentle charm – no crowds, just us, the coast, and a few sheep for comic relief. That messy journey? Best plot twist ever. We left buzzing, already plotting a return. If you’re after a Pembrokeshire base that feels like home with a seaside upgrade, this is it.
