We’d barely turned off the A487 when the satnav decided we were going on a detour through a hedge. One wrong turn down a single-track lane and there we were, bonnet-deep in a field of inquisitive sheep, trying to reverse without flattening their lunch. By the time we found Mill Barn Denant again, the cottage was glowing in the late sun, its stone walls and wide glass doors looking far too tidy for the state of us.

The first thing that hit me was the quiet. No traffic, just the soft rush of waves and a blackbird giving it socks from the chimney pot. We dumped the bags, kicked off our shoes and wandered straight out across the lane to the coastal path. The tide was well out, leaving wide, damp sand that squeaked underfoot, and the air smelled of salt and warm grass. We’d planned a proper yomp along the cliffs towards Broad Haven, but the British summer had other ideas; within half an hour the sky turned that familiar Welsh grey and a soft drizzle began to drift in sideways.

We ducked into the little wooden shelter halfway along the path and watched the rain freckle the sea. It wasn’t cold, just that gentle, persistent damp that makes you grateful for a flask of tea. When it eased we carried on, boots squelching, stopping every few minutes to point out guillemots wheeling below or a seal’s dark head bobbing in the swell. By the time we reached the sandy cove we were both laughing at how quickly a “short stroll” had turned into a full coastal safari.

Back at the barn we peeled off soggy layers and left them steaming on the Aga rail while we made toast. The owners had left a note about the best rock-pooling spots at low tide, and we decided tomorrow would be an early start—weather permitting, of course. That evening the clouds cleared just long enough for a pink-streaked sunset over St Brides Bay, and we sat on the deck with mugs of wine, socks still damp, feeling gloriously windswept.

It struck me, watching the light fade, how often our best days happen when the plan falls apart. We’d come for hikes and sea swims, yet the drizzle had given us slower miles, unexpected shelter chats and the kind of easy laughter that only happens when you’re both slightly soggy. The cottage felt like the perfect base for that sort of gentle chaos: close enough to the cliffs that you can step out and let the weather decide what happens next.
