We set off from Haverfordwest with the satnav cheerfully promising a twenty-minute drive, which turned into forty when we took the wrong turning at a roundabout and ended up circling a roundabout twice like a pair of confused sheep. By the time we bumped down the final track to Newton West Farm, the boot was half open and our snacks had migrated under the seats. Still, the sight of the low stone farmhouse catching the late sun made the detour feel almost forgivable.

The cottage itself sat just back from the lane, its garden running straight onto the coastal path. We unloaded the car in that lazy, one-bag-at-a-time fashion that only happens on proper holidays, then stood for a moment simply listening to the gulls and the distant hush of the tide. Inside, everything smelled faintly of woodsmoke and fresh linen. We kicked off our shoes, made tea in mismatched mugs, and carried them straight out to the bench by the hedge.

That first afternoon set the tone for the whole stay. We didn’t plan a single thing beyond “see how the weather feels.” The beach lay a short walk down the field path, and once we reached it we simply stayed, spreading an old blanket on the warm sand and watching the water slide in and out. A paperback came along but stayed mostly closed; the pages kept threatening to flutter away in the breeze, and it was easier just to lie there doing nothing in particular.

Each morning began the same way: slow coffee on the patio while the sun climbed over the rooftops, then a wander to the shore if the tide was right. We collected a few pale stones, not because we needed souvenirs, but because they felt pleasant in the hand. Back at the cottage we read in the garden until the shade moved, then moved with it, dragging deckchairs like sleepy tortoises. Lunch was whatever happened to be in the fridge, eaten outside with sand still between our toes.

By the third day I’d stopped checking my phone altogether. The signal was patchy anyway, and there was nothing urgent waiting that couldn’t wait a little longer. Instead I found myself noticing small things: the way the light changed on the water at four o’clock, the neighbour’s dog barking at nothing in particular, the comforting creak of the cottage door when the evening cooled. It felt oddly luxurious to have no agenda beyond deciding whether to sit in the sun or the shade.

On our last afternoon we walked the coastal path only as far as the next little cove, then turned back when the thought of another cup of tea became too appealing. Back at Newton West Farm we sat outside until the midges appeared, talking about nothing much and laughing at how little we’d done. I realised then that the best part of the holiday hadn’t been any grand plan, but the simple permission to stop rushing.
