About Pembrokeshire
Still chuckling, we unloaded the car and took our first proper look around. The barn sat low against the fields, all warm stone and big wooden doors that had clearly seen a few Welsh winters. Inside it felt instantly welcoming—high ceilings, a wood-burner already laid, and that faint, comforting smell of old timber and fresh coffee someone had left behind. We kicked off our shoes, made a quick cuppa, and wandered straight out the back to see what the fuss was about. The garden sloped gently towards a little wooden gate, and beyond it the footpath wound down through gorse and bracken until the sea appeared, a silvery strip under a soft grey sky. It wasn’t dramatic, just quietly beautiful, the sort of view that makes you slow down without even noticing. We stood there for ages, mugs in hand, listening to the gulls and the distant wash of waves on the cove below. I could already feel the long drive loosening its grip on my shoulders. Back inside, we explored the rest of the place like nosy new neighbours. The kitchen was small but perfectly stocked for simple meals, and the living area had a squashy sofa that looked purpose-built for rainy afternoons. Upstairs, the bedroom windows framed nothing but sky and fields, and I caught myself wondering why we always race around so much at home when somewhere like this exists an hour and a half down the motorway. Later we wandered the short path to the beach, shoes in hand, the sand still warm from a weak afternoon sun. It felt good to stretch our legs properly after the drive, and the mishap with the mirror already seemed like the best sort of omen—nothing ruined, just a reminder not to take everything so seriously. Standing there with salt on my lips and the barn waiting quietly behind us, I realised the holiday had already started the moment we turned off the main road. |
