About Pembrokeshire
Stepping out of the car felt like surfacing after a long dive. The air was properly fresh, carrying that unmistakable mix of salt and grass that only happens when you’re this close to the Pembrokeshire coast. We fumbled with the key safe for a minute too long—my own fault for writing the code on a scrap of paper that promptly vanished into the footwell—before the door swung open to reveal a cosy living room with a wood burner already set and a note from the owner suggesting we light it if the evening turned chilly. We left the unpacking for later and wandered straight through to the kitchen, where a window over the sink framed a slice of the bay. The tide was out, leaving a wide stretch of sand that looked almost golden in the softening light. A kettle went on while we explored the rest of the ground floor: a snug dining area, a bathroom with a proper shower, and a small utility room that already held a few sandy wellies from previous guests. Upstairs, two bedrooms waited under low ceilings, both with views that made you want to linger at the window rather than unpack. By the time we carried our bags in, the sun was slipping lower and the breeze had picked up enough to make the curtains stir. We decided the beach could wait until morning and instead took our mugs outside to sit on the bench by the garden wall. From there we could just make out the path that wound down toward the water, and the faint sound of waves carried up on the wind. It struck me, sitting there with my tea going cold, how quickly the long drive and the satnav drama had faded. The cottage felt like it had been waiting patiently, ready to remind us that sometimes the best part of a holiday is simply arriving and realising you’ve nowhere else to be. |
