About Pembrokeshire
Still chuckling, we pulled up outside Y Cartws just as the light was starting to soften. The cottage sat tucked behind a low stone wall, its whitewashed walls glowing in the late sun and the sound of waves already drifting up from the cove below. We tumbled out stiff-legged, the children immediately claiming the little patch of grass as their own kingdom while I wrestled with the key safe. Inside, everything felt instantly welcoming: a low-beamed living room with squashy sofas, a wood-burner ready for later, and a kitchen stocked with the sort of mismatched mugs that always seem to make tea taste better. The real draw, though, was the view from the back windows. A short scramble down the lane brought us to a stretch of golden sand that curved gently between rocky headlands. The tide was out, leaving wide, damp stretches perfect for collecting shells and the sort of seaweed that looks suspiciously like alien spaghetti. We kicked off shoes, let the cold water nip at our toes, and watched a couple of oystercatchers skitter along the shoreline. It felt like the sort of beach that doesn’t need showing off—just quietly gets on with being beautiful. Back at the cottage, the evening settled into that easy rhythm only a proper family break seems to allow. While the kettle bubbled, the children spread their sandy treasures across the kitchen table and I stood at the open door, breathing in that unmistakable mix of salt and wood-smoke. There’s something gently humbling about arriving somewhere new and realising, within minutes, that you’ve already slowed down. No grand plans, no frantic itinerary—just the simple pleasure of knowing the sea is a two-minute stroll away and that tomorrow can wait until it’s good and ready. Later, with the children tucked up in the low-ceilinged bedrooms and the sitting-room lamp casting a warm pool of light, I caught myself smiling at nothing in particular. The journey mishap already felt like part of the story rather than an inconvenience, and the cottage had done what good holiday places do best: made us feel instantly at home without any fuss. Outside, the waves kept their steady hush against the shore, and inside, everything was exactly as it should be—quiet, unhurried, and perfectly enough. |
