About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from Swansea turned into a comedy of errors thanks to our sat-nav’s sudden rebellion. Halfway through, it decided to reroute us via some winding back lane that felt more like a sheep’s personal runway, complete with a flock blocking the way and me frantically honking while the kids in the back chanted “Are we there yet?” like a broken record. To top it off, I’d packed the cool bag with our picnic lunch so hastily that the cheese had leaked everywhere, turning the boot into a cheesy crime scene. By the time we crested the hill towards St Florence, I was frazzled, dreaming of a cuppa and swearing off road trips forever.

But oh, pulling up to this new Sykes Cottages gem on the outskirts of the village? Instant mood-lifter. We parked up and stepped onto the drive, that satisfying crunch underfoot instantly washing away the travel woes. There it was, this stunning cottage with its cedar-clad walls glowing in the late afternoon sun, and a neatly paved patio that screamed “relax here with a GandT”. It’s the sort of place that looks like it’s been plucked from a postcard – rural views stretching out over fields, perfect for families like ours. New to the Sykes lineup, it’s got partial ground-floor living which was a godsend with the little ones, and – get this – a telly in every bedroom. No more squabbles over the remote; pure bliss.

First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled inside, bags half-unpacked, and it just felt right – cosy yet spacious, with family-friendly touches everywhere you look. The kids immediately claimed their rooms, plugging into their shows while I finally cracked open that emergency teabag I’d stashed in my pocket. Stepping out onto the patio that first evening, watching the sun dip behind the hills, I had one of those gentle “what am I doing with my life?” moments. Here I was, city-dweller turned accidental farmer for a week, breathing in the fresh Pembrokeshire air, realising how overdue this break was. A bit of self-reflection never hurt, eh? We’d barely arrived, but already plotting beach dashes to nearby Tenby – it’s just a short hop away, with those golden sands calling our names.

That night, after a simple supper of fish and chips grabbed from the village (pro tip: always do this on arrival day), we sprawled out in the living area, the chaos of the journey a distant memory. The cottage wrapped us in comfort, those rural vistas peeking through every window like a gentle reminder to slow down. Sure, the drive was a shambles, but mishaps make the best stories, don’t they? If you’re after a proper family escape in Pembrokeshire, this spot’s got it all – from the heart-melting first glimpse to the promise of lazy days ahead. Can’t recommend it enough.
