About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – we’d set off from Cardiff full of beans, sandwiches packed, but about halfway there, disaster struck. The satnav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us on a scenic detour through some narrow lanes that felt more like goat tracks. We ended up in a muddy layby, laughing hysterically as we recalibrated, munching our slightly squashed butties. Still, by the time we rolled into the area near Haverfordwest, the anticipation was buzzing – visions of crashing waves and proper Welsh nosh dancing in our heads.

Pulling up to the cottage, I was chuffed to bits. Originally the miller’s barn, it’s this cracking blend of modern comfort and traditional charm, with a decked area and hot tub that screamed relaxation. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local cider, and sank into the tub as the sun dipped low – pure bliss after that faffed journey.

But let’s be honest, the real star of the show was the food. Pembrokeshire’s a proper feast for the senses, especially if you’re a bit of a faffer in the kitchen like me. Day one, we hit the local market in Haverfordwest – just a short hop away – and loaded up on the freshest crab, plump mussels, and wheels of Caerphilly cheese that could make you weep. I fancied myself a chef that evening, attempting a seafood linguine in the cottage’s well-kitted kitchen. It started promisingly: garlic sizzling, wine deglazed the pan... but I overcooked the pasta into a gloopy mess. We salvaged it with a heroic squeeze of lemon and piles of bread, giggling over our amateur hour while the hot tub waited forgivingly.

Next morning, breakfast was a triumph – bacon from the market sizzled up with eggs from a nearby farm stall, all washed down with strong tea on the deck. Fuelled up, we wandered to the Tyllwyd Arms, a cosy local just down the road in Denant. Proper pub grub there: lamb shank that fell off the bone, chips crisp as you like, and a pint of Brains to match. The barman regaled us with tales of the area’s fishing hauls – made the meal taste even better.

Evenings became a ritual of pub crawls and home experiments. One night at the Dragon Inn nearby, we demolished platters of battered cod and mushy peas, the kind that sticks to your ribs. Back at the cottage, my other half nailed a Welsh rarebit with that Caerphilly, all bubbly and golden under the grill – I was green with envy after my earlier flop. We’d finish in the hot tub, picking at cheeseboard remnants, steam rising as we chatted about nothing.

Looking back, that gentle self-reflection hit me on the last day, scraping together a breakfast of smoked mackerel and soda bread. Holidays like this remind you life’s too short for rubbish meals – whether it’s a market splurge, a pub pie, or your own botched masterpieces. Pembrokeshire fed us body and soul, and I’m already plotting the next trip for more of the same. What a way to unwind.
