About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – that classic British holiday road trip where everything starts so promisingly. My partner and I piled into the car in the Midlands, tunes on, snacks at the ready, dreaming of salty sea air and lazy days. But about halfway through, just past Carmarthen, disaster struck: a flat tyre. There we were, on the hard shoulder of the A477, me faffing about with the jack while she rang the breakdown service. Half an hour later, sorted, but it had us arriving a tad later than planned. Still, as we trundled into the quiet village of Redberth, the anticipation bubbled up – those winding lanes, the glimpse of open fields, it felt like we were slipping into a proper escape.

Pulling up to the property, my first impressions were spot on. Ample off-road parking for five cars – handy even for our little hatchback – and it’s this charming detached retreat, perfect for a relaxed couple’s break. Stepping inside, it’s all welcoming vibes: a well-appointed kitchen that screamed “cook up a storm”, with a utility room just off it and a shower room nearby. The kitchen-diner’s the real heart, big enough for lingering over breakfasts and plotting the day ahead. No pretensions, just cosy and lived-in, ideal for us two who love a bit of cottage chaos without the hassle.

We settled in quick, unpacking amid a flurry of wellies and beach bags. First morning, we wandered down to the nearby Freshwater East beach, just a short drive away – golden sands, gentle waves lapping, and barely a soul about. Perfect for a spot of paddling, though I did manage to soak my jeans chasing a frisbee into the shallows. Laughing about it over fish and chips from the local takeaway later, it was pure simple pleasure. Afternoons were for ambling along the coastal path towards Manorbier Castle – those dramatic cliffs and wildflowers, with gulls wheeling overhead. We’d pause for a brew from the thermos, watching the tide roll in, feeling miles away from the daily grind.

Evenings back at the place were bliss. I’d rustle up a pasta while she chopped veg, spilling flour everywhere in that gloriously chaotic kitchen dance. One night, we lit candles (after a minor panic when the matches wouldn’t strike) and tucked into shepherd’s pie, windows open to the countryside hush. No TVs blaring, just us chatting about nothing and everything. There was this gentle moment of self-reflection one dusk, sat on the garden bench with mugs of tea, realising how these unhurried days recharge you. No grand plans, just the rhythm of tides, good food, and each other’s company.

Sure, there were little hitches – like the time I locked the keys in the car mid-village shop run, or when the neighbour’s dog decided our picnic was communal. But that’s the charm of it, isn’t it? Pembrokeshire’s quiet corners and this peaceful spot delivered exactly what we needed: a soft reset, full of laughter and those everyday joys. We’re already plotting a return.
