About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – or rather, the white-knuckle sat-nav debacle that nearly turned our holiday into a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car in Cardiff, full of beans after a greasy fry-up, with me navigating via my phone while my mate Dave drove. “Turn left in 200 yards,” it chirped, right as we hurtled past a narrow lane signposted for Efailwen. Next thing, we’re on some single-track road that felt like it was auditioning for a horror film, hedges scraping the wing mirrors and a sheep glaring at us like we’d gatecrashed its nap. Dave’s swearing under his breath (not that I’d repeat it), and I’m frantically zooming in on the map, realising we’ve overshot into Carmarthenshire by a good mile. Classic us – always biting off more than we can chew, even on the A-road to relaxation.

By the time we finally rolled up to this cracking single-storey barn conversion in Efailwen, just on the Pembrokeshire border near Llandissilio, we were frazzled but buzzing. The anticipation had been building all week – visions of cosy nights in and lazy coastal rambles – and pulling into that spot, with the Welsh countryside rolling out like a green quilt, it didn’t disappoint. First impressions? Pure magic. Tucked away in this sleepy village beauty spot, it looked every bit the inviting haven we’d dreamed of, promising easy jaunts around the region without the tourist hordes.

Stepping inside was like a warm hug from an old friend. Those high vaulted ceilings gave it this airy, grand feel without being stuffy, and right there in the living room inglenook sat a delightful log burner, begging for a stack of welsh coal (or logs, whatever – I’m no expert). We dumped our bags and flopped onto the comfy lounge seating, flicking on the flat-screen with full Sky package. Bliss – Dave immediately claimed the remote for some footie highlights, while I pottered next door to the country-style kitchen. Cream units, a massive dining table for our inevitable pasty feasts, and that sink window framing the rolling hills? Chef’s kiss. I half-expected to see a cow photobombing the view.

That first evening, after the arrival chaos, we cracked open a few tins and just soaked it in. No grand plans yet, just the joy of being there. A gentle wander down to nearby Llandissilio the next morning revealed a proper village gem – the local shop for milk and papers, then a short hop to spots like the peaceful River Eastern Cleddau for a bit of splashing about. We even nipped over to Narberth, barely five miles away, for a mooch around its quirky independent shops and a cream tea that had me questioning all my life choices up to that point. Laughing about our sat-nav saga over sausage and mash later, I had one of those quiet moments: holidays like this remind you life’s too short for perfect itineraries. Sometimes the best bits are the mishaps that land you in a place this charming, with mates, a cracking barn, and Pembrokeshire on your doorstep. Can’t wait to go back – sat-nav be damned.
