About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – one of those classic British road trips where the satnav decides to have a midlife crisis just as you hit the winding lanes near Tenby. We’d packed the car with enough books, snacks, and mismatched beach towels to suggest we were fleeing the apocalypse, but about five miles out, the heavens opened and my windscreen wipers gave up the ghost. Cue me pulling over in a layby, faffing with fuses while the rain drummed on the roof like an impatient drummer. Half an hour and a soggy jumper later, we were back on track, and honestly, it only made the arrival feel like a proper adventure.

Pulling up to this gorgeous all-ground-floor spot in Penally, nestled right on the owner’s land with the Welsh coast practically winking at you from afar, I felt that proper holiday buzz kick in. The bi-fold doors swung open to flood the place with light, and we stepped into this bright, airy haven – think plush blue sofa begging for a slump, a mustard armchair that’s basically a hug in furniture form, and a kitchen kitted out with everything from a gas hob to a dishwasher, so self-catering felt like a treat rather than a chore. The outside area? Blimey, it was the star – a cracking patio setup with space to sprawl, surrounded by that lush Pembrokeshire greenery. First impressions? Spot on. We were buzzing to just… stop.

And stop we did. After months of rushing about back home, this place was made for doing sod all, and we embraced it like pros. Mornings kicked off with lazy brews on the patio, watching the odd rabbit hop about while the sea breeze carried that salty tang from nearby beaches like Tenby Sands or Penally’s own stretch, just a short amble away. No grand plans, mind – we’d potter into the garden with a book (I finally cracked that thriller I’d been lugging around for ages), flop on the outdoor seats, and let hours slip by. Lunch was whatever we rustled up – a simple pasta or sarnies from the well-stocked fridge – eaten al fresco, toes in the grass, giggling at the seagulls squawking overhead like they owned the place.

Afternoons blurred into this blissful nothing: me in the armchair with a cuppa, partner dozing on the sofa, the dishwasher humming away so we didn’t even have to lift a finger. We’d wander the garden paths, spotting butterflies and breathing in that coastal calm, maybe nipping down to Penally village for a pint at the cosy local or ice creams from a beach kiosk, but always back to base for more lounging. One evening, as the sun dipped low painting the sky all pink and gold, I caught myself staring out those massive doors, book forgotten, and had a proper moment. Life’s so frantic usually – deadlines, emails, the lot – but here, slowing right down felt like the best decision ever. Who knew joy could be this simple? No hikes up mountains or ticking off castles (though Caldey Island’s glow was tempting from afar); just us, the garden’s embrace, and time stretching out like a cat in the sun.

By the end of the week, we’d created memories without even trying – recharging batteries we didn’t know were flat. If you’re after a Pembrokeshire escape that’s all about the art of bugger all, this is your spot. Pure magic.
