About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – me behind the wheel, my partner navigating with that app that kept losing signal just as we hit the twisty lanes near Narberth. We’d packed the car with enough cheese, crackers, and a cheeky bottle of wine for the journey, dreaming of lazy days by the sea. But about 20 minutes from our destination, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided to play chicken with our Fiat, forcing me into an emergency swerve that sent our picnic tumbling everywhere. Cheese wheels rolling under the seats, wine miraculously intact – we laughed till we cried, pulling over to salvage what we could. Typical us, turning a simple two-hour trip into a comedy of errors.

By the time we rolled up to this welcoming barn conversion in the quiet hamlet of Llanmill, just two miles from Narberth, we were buzzing with anticipation. Would it live up to the photos? One glimpse and we were smitten. Tucked adjacent to the owners’ home on their peaceful smallholding, it felt like stepping into a hug – cosy, characterful, and perfectly set up for a couple’s romantic retreat. The sort of place where you can flop onto the sofa with a cuppa and forget the world exists. And those seating areas around the little lake? Pure magic for evening chats as the sun dipped low.

We wasted no time settling in, unpacking amid the gentle chaos of cottage life – mismatched mugs in the kitchen, a wood burner begging for logs, and that faint farmyard whiff that somehow smells like holiday bliss. First impressions? Spot on. The owner, a proper chef, popped over with a warm welcome and a menu for her homemade breakfasts using local produce. We booked one straight away, plus a casual cookery class for the next day. No fancy plans, just simple pleasures: strolling hand-in-hand around the lake at dusk, spotting herons and feeling miles away from everyday grind, even though Narberth’s boutique shops were a five-minute drive.

Days blurred into the best kind of rhythm. Mornings started with her fabulous brekkie – think fluffy scrambled eggs from their own hens, crispy bacon from nearby farms, and fresh bread that put our city toast to shame. We’d potter out to nearby spots like the Preseli Hills for gentle walks, breathing in that crisp Welsh air, or head to the stunning beaches at Tenby, just a short hop away, for sand-between-toes lounging and fish and chips from a beach hut. One afternoon, we tried her high cuisine private dining – lamb from local hills, paired with Pembrokeshire ales. It was posh without the pretension, us giggling over our attempts at her cookery class, where I somehow turned perfectly good pastry into a wonky pie. “Chef material,” she joked kindly.

There was this quiet moment one evening, sat by the lake with a GandT, watching the stars pop out. I caught myself reflecting – life’s so hectic back home, rushing about like headless chickens. Here, in this little Pembrokeshire haven, we’d rediscovered the joy in doing sod all together. No kids, no deadlines, just us and the simple chaos of cottage living: a power cut that had us fumbling for candles (romantic, right?), or chasing a wayward duck from the garden. It was perfect.

If you’re after a chilled couple’s break, this is it – close to Narberth’s eateries and those fabulous south Pembrokeshire beaches, yet worlds away in the best way. We left with full bellies, fuller hearts, and a promise to return. Pure Wales at its cosiest.
