About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – a proper British road trip, complete with sat-nav drama. We’d loaded up the car with wellies, waterproofs, and enough crisps to last a siege, buzzing with that holiday anticipation where everything feels possible. But halfway through Carmarthenshire, the heavens opened, and I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had me convinced we’d end up in a field. Cue mild panic, a hasty three-point turn in the pouring rain, and my other half muttering about my map-reading skills. Still, we laughed it off, and by the time we pulled up to this gorgeous countryside cottage near Langdon, just 2.2 miles from Kilgetty, the stress melted away. First impressions? Spot on. Tranquil spot with off-road parking, pet-friendly vibes perfect for our scruffy labradoodle, and that welcoming feel as we stepped inside to a cracking kitchen/diner and a cosy sitting room with leather sofas begging for a collapse.

We’d come for the walks – Pembrokeshire’s coastal paths are legendary, and this place is smack in the heart of it. Day one, the sun cracked through, so we headed straight out for a gentle stomp to Saundersfoot, about 4.4 miles away. It’s an easy coastal hike along clifftops, with sea views that make you forget the world. We pottered past little bays, spotting seals bobbing about, and stopped for fish and chips in the harbour – proper holiday bliss. I felt like a kid again, wind in my hair, no emails pinging.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Next morning, grey skies rolled in, turning our ambitious Tenby cliff walk plan into a muddy scramble closer to home. We adapted, hitting woodland trails around Kilgetty instead, dodging puddles and giggling as the dog turned into a mud monster. It was bracing, that fresh-air slap, with ferns brushing our legs and the odd rabbit darting off. Lunch was a soggy picnic under a tree, thermos of tea saving the day. Reflecting on it now, those damp days taught me something – I’m a fair-weather walker at heart, dreaming of endless sun, but there’s real joy in pulling on the waterproofs and just going anyway. It’s character-building, innit?

By mid-week, the forecast flipped again, gifting us a golden afternoon for the Amroth to Wiseman’s Bridge path – a stunner with castle ruins peeking over the horizon and caves to explore at low tide. We timed it right, paddling in rock pools, the sun warming our faces as gulls wheeled overhead. Evenings were for drying off in the cottage, feet up by the electric fire, swapping stories over homemade stew. One rainy evening, staring out at the downpour, I had a quiet moment thinking how these unpredictable hikes mirror life – plans change, you get wet, but you keep walking, and the views are worth it.

Our last day summed it up: a bracing coastal bluff walk in drizzle that cleared to rainbows. Pembrokeshire’s paths had us hooked, weather and all. If you’re after that mix of adventure and cosy retreat, this corner’s magic. We’re already plotting a return – next time, I’m packing extra socks.
