About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – we’d packed the car to the gills with wellies, maps, and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. Just as I was starting to mutter about why we didn’t just stick to the A roads, we rounded a bend and there it was: our little barn conversion, nestling into the countryside with those cracking rural views stretching out like a proper Welsh welcome. First impressions? Spot on. It looked every bit the cosy romantic hideaway we’d been dreaming of, far enough from Narberth’s buzz to feel like our own secret spot.

Stepping inside, we were hit with this brilliant mix of old-school charm and modern touches – think plush L-shaped sofa begging for a Netflix binge, and a woodburning stove that promised evenings of pure bliss once we got it going. We dumped the bags and cracked open a cuppa, just soaking in the quiet. No kids, no deadlines, just us two, finally unwinding after months of proper slog at work. It got me thinking, doesn’t it? How we chase the big adventures, but it’s these simple setups that really recharge the batteries.

First morning, we wandered out for a gentle amble along the nearby paths – the air was that crisp, sea-tinged kind that makes you grin like an idiot. Pembrokeshire’s coast is only a short hop away, so we headed to Amroth Beach, just a few miles down the road. Paddled in the shallows, skimmed stones (I’m rubbish at it, mind – most of mine plopped like sad ducks), and scoffed fish and chips from a takeaway van while the waves crashed. Back at the barn, chaos ensued when we tried lighting the stove: smoke billowed everywhere until we twigged the flue damper was playing silly buggers. Laughing our heads off, we flung open windows and sorted it with a bit of YouTube wizardry. Cottage life, eh? Never dull.

Next day, we pottered over to Narberth itself – it’s tiny, but dead charming with its independent shops and a cracking bakery where we grabbed pasties for lunch. Sat on a bench people-watching, feeling all smug about our escape. Evenings were the best: curled up on that sofa with the stove crackling, sharing a bottle of wine and plotting nothing more taxing than tomorrow’s beach walk. One night, we drove up to Preseli Hills for sunset views – close enough for a quick jaunt, and the colours over the landscape were magic.

By the end of the week, we were proper hooked on this relaxed rhythm: brekkie with a view, lazy coastal rambles to places like Tenby’s harbour (staying local-ish, mind), and those little domestic faff-ups that turn into the best stories. It’s made me reflect – in our hectic world, there’s something dead special about a place like this, reminding you that joy’s in the small stuff, mishaps and all. We’re already plotting a return.
