About Pembrokeshire
I finally made it to Pembrokeshire after what felt like the world's slowest drive down from Manchester. We'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some classic Oasis, but about halfway through, disaster struck – a rogue sheep decided to play chicken with the car on one of those narrow lanes near Carmarthen. Heart in mouth, I swerved just in time, but it left us both giggling nervously and vowing to pack more chocolate for the road next time. Still, as the rolling green hills gave way to that bracing sea air, the anticipation built. Tenby was just around the corner, and our little holiday cottage was calling.

Pulling up to the property, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those cosy, detached numbers with a proper homely vibe – think whitewashed walls, a welcoming porch, and bags of charm without any fuss. The garden hit me first: wildflower borders buzzing with bees, a hammock slung between apple trees, and that unbeatable view peeking over to Caldey Island on a clear day. We dumped the bags and cracked open a cuppa right there on the patio, the sun warming our faces. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like the perfect spot to switch off completely.

The joy of this trip wasn't about ticking off a massive itinerary – heavens no, that'd defeat the object. It was all about doing very little, and loving every lazy minute. Mornings kicked off with brekkie in the sun-drenched kitchen, me fumbling with the toaster while she sorted fresh eggs from the local farm shop down the road. Then it was garden lounging: feet up on a lounger, nose in a battered paperback (I finally cracked on with that Middlemarch I'd been lugging around for years). The birdsong was relentless, and every so often a breeze would rustle the leaves, carrying the faint crash of waves from Tenby Bay. Bliss.

Afternoons blurred into siestas. We'd wander all of five minutes to the harbour for a pasty and a gawp at the fishing boats, but mostly it was hammock time, swaying gently with a cold cider in hand. One day, I swear I dozed off mid-chapter, waking to find a cheeky robin eyeing my biscuit crumbs. Laughed my socks off at that – proper countryside comedy. Evenings meant firing up the barbecue in the garden, grilling local sausages while the sky turned that incredible pink over the coast. No rush, no plans, just us, the stars popping out, and the odd owl hooting in the distance.

Looking back, it's funny how I needed this. Back home, I'm always rushing – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here, slowing down felt revolutionary. That gentle self-reflection hit me one quiet afternoon in the garden, book forgotten on my lap: life's too short not to savour these nothing-moments. Pembrokeshire worked its magic, and we'll be back for more loafing around before you know it. If you're after proper downtime, hunt down a spot like this – you won't regret it.
