About Pembrokeshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pembrokeshire – one of those classic British road trips where the satnav decides to have a midlife crisis just as you hit the twisty lanes near Milford Haven. We’d packed the car with enough cheese toasties and crisps to feed a small army, my other half navigating with that optimistic squint, when suddenly we veer off into a muddy farm track. Turns out, the postcode was playing tricks, and we ended up doing a three-point turn in front of a bemused herd of cows. Laugh? We nearly cried. But as we finally rolled up to this gorgeous detached holiday home in the quiet village of Houghton, about four and a half miles from Neyland, all that stress melted away. First impressions? Pure magic. The private driveway swallowed our car with room to spare (handy for six vehicles, apparently), and stepping through the door felt like being hugged by the house itself.

It’s the kind of place that screams family-friendly retreat without trying too hard – welcoming two well-behaved dogs, which ours certainly tried to be. We’re just a couple in our forties, no kids in tow, but it was perfect for that relaxed getaway vibe, pottering about like we owned the place. The bright open-plan kitchen and dining area is the absolute heart of it, all light and airy, kitted out for everything from lazy brekkies with strong tea to knocking up a proper roast. We spent our first evening there, sleeves rolled up, chopping veg and sipping wine, chatting nonsense while the dogs flopped by our feet. No fancy telly marathons needed; just that easy togetherness.

Days blurred into this blissful cottage life chaos – the good kind, mind. Mornings started with a stroll down to the coastal path near Dale, breathing in that salty sea air, watching gulls squabble over chips. We’d wander back for coffee in the garden, then hop in the car for Neyland’s marina, where the fishing boats bob about and you can grab fresh crab from the harbour lads. Simple pleasures, eh? One afternoon, we tackled a gentle hike around the headland, getting properly windswept, then rewarded ourselves with fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, eaten on a bench overlooking the Haven. Back at the house, it was all about unwinding – board games that descended into giggles, a spot of reading by the window, and me burning the toast because I got distracted by the view.

There was this gentle moment of self-reflection one evening, sat at that big dining table as the sun dipped low. We’d been rushing about life back home, hadn’t we? Work emails, endless to-do lists. Here, with the dogs snoring and a half-eaten crumble in front of us, I realised it’s these daft, unhurried bits – the shared glances over a daft mishap, the quiet joy of rustling up dinner together – that recharge the soul. No Instagram perfection, just us, a bit scruffy and content.

We left with sandy boots and fuller hearts, already plotting a return. Pembrokeshire’s got that pull – understated, real, and ever so welcoming. If you’re after a break that’s more hygge than hassle, this corner of Wales is your spot.
