About Saundersfoot
We'd been dreaming of a proper getaway for ages, just me, my wife Jen, and our two cheeky lads, away from the daily grind. So when we booked this little barn conversion tucked away on a working farm between Haverfordwest and Narberth, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you're mentally packing flip-flops and sun cream before you've even left the driveway. The drive down from Manchester was meant to be a breeze, but oh no, about halfway through Shropshire, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a scenic detour through some muddy back lane that looked like it'd starred in a horror film. Cue me swearing under my breath (well, a bit), Jen rolling her eyes, and the boys chanting "Are we there yet?" on loop. Classic family road trip chaos, but we laughed it off with crisps and a playlist of terrible 90s hits.

Pulling up to the place after that faff, though, all was forgiven in a heartbeat. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, utterly charming. This beautifully renovated barn sat snug on the farm, all cosy and inviting, furnished to a standard that made our city flat look like a bedsit. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the boys were straight off exploring while Jen and I just stood there grinning like idiots, breathing in that fresh Welsh air. It felt like stepping into a hug from an old mate.

Settling in was pure bliss. Mornings kicked off with brekkie chaos – me burning toast while the lads chased the farm chickens (with permission, mind), and Jen brewing up mugs of tea strong enough to stand the spoon in. We'd potter out for scenic walks along those quiet country lanes right from the door, linking up to footpaths through Canaston Woods. The Knights' Way bits were a highlight, meandering past ancient trees and that lovely old Blackpool Mill, with the river gurgling away like it was telling stories. The boys loved spotting squirrels and building stick forts; Jen and I held hands and pretended we were explorers, not knackered parents.

Afternoons were for simple pleasures – a gentle stroll into Narberth for its indie shops and scrummy artisan grub, picking up local cheeses and fudge that vanished before tea. One evening, we had a right laugh trying to barbecue in the drizzle, everything soggy but spirits high, ending up with fish and chips instead. No grand plans, just cottage life: board games by the fire, stargazing from the garden, and collapsing into proper comfy beds.

Clerkenhill Adventure Farm was a stone's throw away – perfect for the boys to burn off energy with tractor rides and animal feeding, while Jen and I sipped coffee and watched. Picton Castle Gardens felt like our own secret spot, wandering the paths hand-in-hand, reflecting on how we'd got so caught up in work lately. That quiet moment by the ponds, with the lads splashing about, hit me – life's too short not to chase these simple joys more often.

It was the kind of break that recharges your soul without the Instagram pressure. Saundersfoot area's got that magic for relaxed family couples: unhurried walks, farmyard fun, and enough charm to make you forget the world. Can't wait to go back.
