About Saundersfoot
I’ll never forget the drive down to Saundersfoot – we’d packed the car to the gills with beach toys, snacks, and enough changes of clothes for a month, even though it was just a week away. The sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis somewhere near Carmarthen, rerouting us down a narrow lane that felt more like a goat track than a road. We ended up nose-to-nose with a tractor, me frantically reversing while the kids cheered like it was a fairground ride. Typical family holiday start, eh? But once we shook that off and crested the hill into the village, all was forgiven. The sea sparkled like it was showing off, and those golden sands stretched out invitingly. I could already taste the fish and chips.

Pulling up to our super apartment, part of a converted former hotel refurbished back in 2016, I had this buzz of anticipation – would it live up to the photos? Blimey, it exceeded them. Tucked less than 200 metres from the delightful harbour and beaches, it was spot on for lazy wanders. The place had that fresh, welcoming vibe, with everything we needed for a fuss-free stay: comfy beds, a well-stocked kitchen, and a balcony perfect for evening cups of tea watching the boats bob about. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and hit the sand within minutes, the kids paddling while I pretended not to notice the sand creeping into my trainers.

Saundersfoot’s got this unhurried charm that’s pure magic for a family break. Mornings kicked off with brekkie from one of the quirky little shops in the village – fresh croissants and local sausages that vanished before you could say “more juice, please?” Then we’d amble along the coastal path, which snakes right through the seaside village and part of that epic 186-mile stretch. It’s brilliant for spotting seals or just puffing up a hill with ice cream bribes for the little ones. No need for grand plans; the simple pleasures shone through – building wonky sandcastles that inevitably toppled, or chasing waves while the sun warmed our backs.

Afternoons meant chaos in the best way, cottage-life style. The kids turned the living room into a den of doom with blankets and torches, while I rustled up picnic lunches for beach feasts. We popped into the harbour for crab sandwiches at a waterside café, giggling as the seagulls plotted their next swoop. Evenings were for strolls to check out the interesting shops – picking up rock sweets and silly souvenirs – or a family meal at one of the cosy restaurants, where the portions were generous and the chatter louder than the waves.

One gentle moment hit me on the path at dusk: watching my lot scamper ahead, red-cheeked and carefree, I realised how these scrappy, sand-filled days recharge us more than any posh spa. No schedules, just us lot soaking up Saundersfoot’s relaxed magic. We didn’t venture far – a quick drive to family spots like Folly Farm for animal antics, or Carew’s historic castle for a bit of knightly pretend-play. It was all close enough for spontaneity, far enough from the daily grind.

Packing up felt bittersweet, but we left with sandy socks, full bellies, and plans to return. Saundersfoot’s the sort of place that wraps you in simple joys and sends you home grinning. If you’re after a chilled family escape, this is your spot.
