About Saundersfoot
Number 12 turned out to be a sweet little stone semi tucked just back from the seafront, with a blue door and a hanging basket already dripping with late-summer lobelia. The key was exactly where the host had promised—under the pot with the slightly sarcastic-looking gnome—and stepping inside felt like exhaling after a very long day. The front room was low-ceilinged and cosy, all pale walls and squishy sofas aimed at a wood burner that still smelled faintly of last winter’s fires. A narrow galley kitchen led off to the left, and I could already picture us elbowing each other while making tea in the morning. Upstairs, the two bedrooms were small but perfectly judged: one double with a view straight onto the rooftops and a slice of sparkling water beyond, the other a neat twin with bunks that our niece would have claimed immediately. The bathroom was simple and spotless, with one of those shower heads that actually gives you proper pressure instead of a apologetic drizzle. We dumped our bags, kicked off shoes still gritty from the lay-by we’d stopped at, and wandered straight back out again—because the beach was only a couple of minutes’ stroll down the lane. Saundersfoot’s little harbour was busy with families packing up for the day, buckets clattering and dogs shaking sand from their ears. We bought cones from the kiosk on the front—two generous dollops of honeycomb for me, plain vanilla for him—and perched on the low wall to watch the tide slip out. The air tasted of salt and vinegar, and for the first time all day my shoulders dropped. That silly bin incident already felt like the perfect ice-breaker for the week; it had rattled us just enough to make the quiet cottage feel like proper sanctuary rather than another checklist item. Back at Number 12 the lights glowed warm through the net curtains as we let ourselves in again. I caught our reflection in the hall mirror—wind-blown hair, sandy trainers, faintly ridiculous grins—and thought how rarely we manage to switch off like this. Perhaps the mishap had done us a favour; nothing says “you’ve arrived” quite like apologising to a neighbour’s hydrangeas before you’ve even unpacked. |
