We set off from Cardiff with the usual over-optimism about traffic, and of course the satnav decided to send us the scenic route through every roundabout in west Wales. By the time we pulled into Saundersfoot the sun was already low, the kids were bickering over the last packet of crisps, and I managed to reverse the car straight into a low wall outside the cottage. Nothing dramatic, just a gentle crunch and a dent that will probably cost more than the whole weekend, but it did make the neighbours pop their heads out for a quick hello.

The cottage itself looked exactly like the photos: whitewashed walls, slate roof, a little wooden gate that squeaked when you pushed it. Inside, the living room opened straight onto a patio with two stripy deckchairs already facing the evening light. We dumped the bags, made tea in mismatched mugs, and sat outside without even unpacking properly. That was the plan, really—just sit.

Next morning the beach was a five-minute shuffle down the lane, shoes in hand, sun already warm on the back of our necks. Saundersfoot’s sand was perfect for doing nothing: wide, clean, and not so crowded that you felt you had to stake a claim. We spread an old blanket, opened a book each, and let the kids construct increasingly ambitious sandcastles that the tide quietly dismantled by lunchtime. I kept meaning to go for a proper walk along the coastal path, but every time I stood up the sun and the sound of the little waves talked me back down again.

By the second day we’d perfected the art of moving very slowly. Mornings started with coffee on the patio, watching the gulls argue over someone’s leftover chips from the night before. Afternoons were a gentle rotation between the cottage garden and the beach, broken only by the occasional trip to the little supermarket for more bread and the excuse for an ice cream. I’d brought a stack of paperbacks I’d been meaning to finish for months; by Wednesday I’d read three chapters of one and felt oddly proud of myself.

There’s something quietly exposing about having nowhere to rush to. Without the usual list of sights and meals out, you notice small things: how the light changes on the water around four o’clock, the way the cottage smells of sun on wood after a day with the doors open, the satisfying thud of the front gate when you come back from the beach with sandy feet. I caught myself checking my phone less, not because I’d made a noble decision, but because there simply wasn’t anything urgent waiting.

On the last evening we ate fish and chips on the patio while the sky turned that particular Welsh pink that never photographs properly. The car dent still looked sorry for itself, but I’d stopped noticing it. Sitting there with salt on my fingers and nowhere else to be, I realised the weekend had done exactly what we’d half-jokingly hoped: absolutely nothing, and all of it perfectly.
