We’d barely made it off the A477 when the satnav decided to send us on a scenic detour through someone’s farmyard, complete with a very unimpressed sheep blocking the lane. By the time we pulled up at Copybush Cottage, the boot was half-open, the dog was barking at nothing in particular, and I was already wondering why I’d packed three different waterproof jackets “just in case.”

The cottage sat just back from the road that drops into Saundersfoot, all whitewashed walls and a little gravel drive that crunched under the tyres like we were arriving somewhere properly remote. Inside it felt instantly welcoming—big squishy sofas, a wood burner that looked well-used, and windows that framed the sea like a postcard someone had left open. We dumped the bags, made a quick cuppa, and headed straight out again; the sun was actually shining and the coast path was calling.

Ten minutes later we were on the cliff trail heading south towards Wiseman’s Bridge, the breeze carrying that proper salty edge that makes every breath feel a bit fresher. The path hugged the edge so closely that every few steps you could peer down and spot tiny coves you’d never reach without a boat. We’d planned to go all the way to Amroth and back, but after an hour the clouds rolled in like they’d been waiting for their cue. Within minutes the drizzle turned into proper rain—nothing dramatic, just that steady Welsh sort that soaks you through before you notice. We turned around laughing, hoods up, trainers squelching, and decided the sensible thing was to stop for chips in the village instead.

Back at the cottage we peeled off damp layers and watched the sea through the rain-streaked window, steam rising from our mugs. It struck me then how often these little weather interruptions end up being the bits you remember best—the unplanned detour, the soggy walk cut short, the way a simple cottage by the beach suddenly feels like the cosiest place on earth once you’re safely inside it.
